Write a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters on large-bubble bubble wrap with permanent markers. Kids find and pop each uppercase letter, then hunt for its lowercase match: a built-in I-Spy game for letter recognition.

⚠️ Safety first

  • An adult (or older child) writes the letters with permanent markers. Let the ink dry before little ones handle the wrap.
  • Bubble wrap is a plastic sheet. Supervise young children, keep it away from faces and heads, and put it away after play.

Before the kids arrive

  • Write the letters on the bubble wrap before kids arrive so the marker ink is dry. An older child can help.

Steps

  1. Lay a sheet of large-bubble bubble wrap on the table, bubbles up.

  2. Write a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters with permanent markers, one letter per bubble.

  3. Sit down with the kids and call out a letter.

  4. Spot the uppercase letter and pop it.

  5. Hunt for the matching lowercase letter and pop that one too.

  6. Try different ways to POP the bubbles.

  7. Keep calling out letters until all the matches are popped.

Tips

  • If you have an older child, he/she can help write the letters. It's a great way to practice writing. My 5 year old enjoys helping me set up activities for her sister.from the author
  • Matching each uppercase letter to its lowercase partner is an in-built I-Spy game, which is always fun for the little ones.from the author
  • We taped the wrap on our window, but it was a bit difficult to pop the bubbles without holding them with both hands. A flat table works better for popping.from the author
  • Just a plain old bubble wrap and permanent markers gave us an hour of alphabet popping fun.from the author

Make it your own

  • Tape the bubble wrap to a window and do the letter hunt there. Popping is harder, though.
  • Have an older sibling write the letters as handwriting practice.
