# Yarn Apple Tree Craft
> Snip red or yellow yarn, coil it around a finger into little apples, and glue them onto a painted green coffee-filter treetop with a craft-stick trunk. A simple fine-motor and scissor-skills craft for an apple theme.
- URL: https://www.funlittles.com/apple-tree-craft-yarn-apples-craft/
- Ages: 3–6 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: medium
- Time: prep 20 min, activity 30 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class · one batch serves about 1 kids
- Skills: fine-motor, scissor-skills

## Materials (one batch)
- 1 piece Coffee filters
- Washable kids paint (green)
- 1 piece Paintbrush (household)
- Yarn in red and yellow
- 1 piece Kid scissors (household)
- White school glue
- 1 piece Craft sticks
- 1 sheet Construction paper (brown)
- 1 piece Dark green or black marker (optional) (household)

## Substitutions
- Instead of washable paint: Watercolors (The author's watercolor apple trees use watercolors to color the coffee filters. This post used washable paint instead.)

## Safety
- Supervise scissor use, especially with younger preschoolers.
- Keep loose yarn pieces and yarn balls away from children who still mouth things, and supervise at all times.

## Before you start
- Flatten coffee filters into circles, paint them green with washable paint and let them dry. See the watercolor apple trees post for the process.

## Steps
1. Set out the dry green coffee filter along with red and yellow yarn.
2. Snip the yarn into smaller bits with scissors.
3. Hold one end of a yarn piece and twist it around your finger to start forming a circle.
4. Keep coiling to make lots of little yarn apples. They don't need to be perfect.
5. Squeeze a small circle of glue onto the green coffee filter.
6. Press a yarn apple onto the glue. Repeat until your tree is full of apples.
7. Draw a few leaves on the treetop.
8. Glue a craft stick on for a trunk and glue your tree onto the construction paper.

## Tips
- It was a great fine motor activity that helped with developing scissor skills.
- Show kids how to hold one end of the yarn and twist it around a finger. After a couple of tries both of ours got it and were yarn apple making machines!
- These little yarn circles are just a representation of the apples, so we didn't focus too much on perfection.
- There is always time for goofing off with the yarn bundles!

We used coffee filters and flattened to a circle and painted with washable paint and had them dried. Take a look at our [**watercolor apple trees**](https://www.funlittles.com/watercolor-apple-tree-craft/) to see the process in action. Use **[Washable Kids Paint](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004UBH3/?tag=blmemo-20)**instead of watercolors. Once the green colored coffee filter is dry, set it out along with colored yarn. We love yarn and the kids enjoyed their [**sticky yarn learning activity**](https://www.funlittles.com/fine-motor-activities-sticky-yarn-learning/) and [**sticky fall tree**](https://www.funlittles.com/fall-tree-crafts-sticky-fall-tree-toddlers-can-make/) activity we shared earlier.

It was a great fine motor activity that helped with developing her scissor skills. She snipped the yellow and red yarn into smaller bits.

Then I showed her to hold one end of the yarn and start twisting around her finger to start forming circles.

After a couple of tries both the kids got it and were yarn apple making machines. ha!

Since these little yarn circles are just representation of the apples we didn't focus too much on perfection.

Once the "apples" were created they glued them to the green coffee filter papers.

There is always time for goofing off with the yarn bundles!

Added a few leaves and glue a craft stick for a trunk to finish off the apple craft.

A great preschool craft to go with your apple theme.
