# Halloween Scratch Art Pie Pans
> Paint a foil pie pan with black washable acrylic paint mixed with a little dish soap. Once it's dry, scratch a spider web or any picture with a bamboo skewer so the shiny silver foil peeps through.

- Ages: 4–6 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: medium
- Time: prep 25 min, activity 20 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class
- Skills: fine-motor, drawing, creativity

## Materials (one batch)
- 4 tbsp Black washable acrylic paint
- 2 squirt Dish soap (household)
- 1 piece Disposable foil pie pans
- 1 piece Bamboo skewer (or another sharp tool for etching) (household)
- 1 piece Paintbrush
- 1 piece Small cup or container for mixing the paint (household)

## Substitutions
- Instead of dish soap: Hand soap (The author says hand soap works too.)
- Instead of bamboo skewer: Any sharp tool for etching (Supervise closely with anything pointy.)

## Safety
- Bamboo skewers are pointy. Watch kids closely while they scratch, and collect the skewers when you're done.
- Edges of disposable foil pie pans can be sharp. Check them and handle them gently.
- Acrylic paint, even the washable kind, can stain clothes. Use smocks or old shirts and cover the table.
- Paint and soap are not for mouthing. Wash hands after painting.

## Before you start
- For very eager kids, paint a few pie pans black ahead of time and let them dry, so the kids can start scratching right away.

## Steps
1. Mix a couple of squirts of dish soap into 4 tbsp of black washable acrylic paint.
2. Paint a clean, dry foil pie pan with the black paint, covering the entire area.
3. Let the pie pan dry. It takes about 15 minutes with washable acrylics.
4. Scratch a design into the black paint with a bamboo skewer, so the silver foil shows through.
5. Etch a spider web and add 'Boo!' or 'Happy Halloween' around it.
6. Or scratch whatever you like: a girl, a house, a tree and other "stuff".
7. Hang the finished scratch art on the wall.

## Tips
- The soap added to the paint is what makes it stick to the pie pan, so don't skip it.
- Black gives you the best effect when the silver color of the foil peeps through the black when scratched.
- If you have very eager kids, have a few pie pans painted black already so they can start scratching.
- Kids have their own ideas when it comes to art. My 4 year old was pretty sure about NOT drawing a spider web, and we LOVE them for that!
- It just looks like we created art with a silver pen, but it was all etched on a simple pie plate.

Ready for a super easy Halloween art project? Last year our [**crayon resist spider web art**](https://www.funlittles.com/halloween-art-projects-crayon-resist-spider-web/) was popular in our home and around the web. Based on the same idea, we created another super easy Halloween art with spider web as a central theme.. Well sort of because kids -- they have their own ideas when it comes to art activities and we LOVE them for that!

### Halloween Art : Halloween Scratch Art Project

{ More art projects for kids and Halloween art and **Halloween crafts** on Pinterest} This art project cannot be more straight forward. We are using the super popular scratch art technique { our first experience with scratch art was with [**scratch and glitter eggs**](https://www.funlittles.com/easter-egg-ideas/) for Easter} Materials

- Dish Soap
- Bamboo Skewer or a sharp tool for etching

First make your paint! Add a couple of squirts of dish soap ( or hand soap) with 4 tablespoons of black acrylic paint { washable kid-safe kind works} I have not used the real-deal, artist's acrylics. I always purchase the washable acrylic that come in bottles. I found mine at Jo-Ann's ( Walmart carries them as well) The soap added to the paint makes the paint stick to the pie pan. Next paint a clean dry foil pie pan with the black paint covering the entire area. My foil pie pans were the disposable ones from the Dollar Store. Here I chose to paint with black but you can opt for any color - purple and orange may work as well. But black gives you the best effect when the silver color of the foil peeps through the black when scratched. Let the pie pan dry. It shouldn't take that long if you are using washable acrylics. Mine probably took about 15 minutes. If you have very eager kids it would be best to have a few pie pans painted black already for them to start scratching. Yes! this is a very fun [**art activity for kids.**](https://www.funlittles.com/category/art-projects/) Once the pie pan is dry, it is time to start scratching away. We used a bamboo skewer (goes without saying to please watch your child!) to etch a cool design on the pie pan. Once you start creating on the black pie pan the silver color that shows through is just gorgeous! I intially had a nice Halloween art project in mind. Doesn't this spider web etched on the pie plate looks cool? It would really make a great preschool Halloween art project. But my 4 year old clearly had other plans! She was pretty sure about NOT drawing a spider web but a girl, a house, tree and other "stuff" ( her words) With some uninvited "help' from her 6 year old sister ( that's older siblings for you) they created a scratch art scene. It just looks like we created art with a silver pen. But this was all etched on a simple pie plate. I mean, we are all about simple art activities for kids. I think this one is right up therewith the crayon resist techniques. I'm officially in love with scratch art! These will look beautiful hanging on your wall.
