# Giant Poster Board Christmas Trees
> Paint a white poster board green (peppermint-scented if you like), sprinkle it with glitter and roll it into a giant cone tree. Kids then decorate it with tinsel garland, pom poms and foam stickers.
- URL: https://www.funlittles.com/christmas-crafts-kids-giant-christmas-trees/
- Ages: 3–6 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: medium
- Time: prep 10 min, activity 30 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class · one batch serves about 2 kids
- Skills: fine-motor, scissor-skills, creativity, decorating

## Materials (one batch)
- 1 sheet White poster board
- Green acrylic paint (or washable paint)
- Peppermint oil (optional)
- White craft glitter
- 1 piece Paintbrushes (household)
- 1 piece Clear tape (household)
- 1 piece Stapler (household)
- Tinsel garlands
- Pom poms
- Christmas foam stickers
- White glue
- 1 piece Child-safe scissors (household)

## Substitutions
- Instead of green paint: Washable paint (Works too, but the author found peppermint oil smelled better mixed with acrylic paint.)

## Safety
- Peppermint oil is optional. If you use it, an adult adds only a few drops to the paint. Keep the bottle away from kids, and keep scented paint away from eyes and mouths.
- Adult handles the stapler.
- Pom poms, foam stickers and tinsel pieces are small parts. Supervise closely with toddlers who still mouth things.
- Kids cut the tinsel, so use child-safe scissors and supervise.
- Acrylic paint can stain clothes and surfaces. Cover the work area and use smocks.

## Before you start
- Paint the white poster board green, adding a few drops of peppermint oil to the paint if you like, and shake white glitter over the wet paint.
- Let the paint dry completely.
- Fold the poster board into a giant cone, tape the edges and staple the bottom edges for extra strength.

## Steps
1. Paint the white poster board with green paint, peppermint-scented if you like.
2. Shake white craft glitter over the wet paint and let it dry completely.
3. Adult: fold the poster board into a giant cone, tape the edges and staple the bottom edges.
4. Set the tree on a low window sill or table and lay out tinsel, pom poms, foam stickers and glue.
5. Cut the tinsel garland into smaller pieces.
6. Wrap the tinsel around the tree and tape it in place with clear tape.
7. Glue pom poms all around the base of the tree.
8. Add foam stickers and more pom poms to finish decorating.

## Tips
- All through the holiday season, I ALWAYS add peppermint oil to our paint for Christmas art projects. The tree is already smelling like Christmas before the kids decorate it.
- We liked acrylic paint much better than washable paint for this one, because the peppermint oil smelled better in acrylic.
- I set the tree on the window sill, since that height worked best for the kids.
- My 3-year-old needed help holding the tinsel garland and taping it at the same time. Pair up little ones or have an adult hold while they tape.
- Want it sturdier? Staple the bottom edges of the cone.
- Do this before you put up the real tree. It satisfies the kids' eagerness to decorate.

### How to make a giant Christmas tree and decorate it

Materials

- White Poster Board
- Clear Tape
- Stapler
- Acrylic Paint/Washable Paint
- **[Peppermint Oil](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IS09BT4/?tag=blmemo-20)** {optional}

Grand you $1 white poster board and start painting. All through the holiday season, I ALWAYS add peppermint oil to all our paint while we are doing fun Christmas art projects. Couple of years ago, we did these cute peppermint scented Christmas tree hats craft. We did the same for this project also { actually I think this craft had me get started with adding peppermint oil to paint I think. We did this project at least 3 years ago and ONLY now I'm getting around to making a post } Back to the post, start painting your white poster with peppermint oil scented green paint and give it a good shake of white craft glitter. I found like that we liked acrylic paint much better than regular washable paint for this project since the peppermint oil smelled better mixed in with acrylic paint versus washable paint. Once the paint completely dries, make a giant cone with the white poster board by folding and taping them at the edges. If you want to reinforce them even better, I would staple the bottom edges.

There, you made a giant Christmas tree that is already smelling like Christmas. Now set out all decorating supplies for your beautiful christmas tree. I had the following supplies for them

- Tinsel Garlands
- Pom Poms
- Christmas Foam Stickers
- White Glue

At this time, the children took over the christmas craft and started decorating the tree. I set out the tree on window sill since the height worked out the best for the kids { 5&3 then} They started cutting the tinsel garlands into smaller sizes and started wrapping them. They used clear tape to adhere the tinsel to the poster board Christmas tree.

My 3 year old needed some help to hold the tinsel garland and to tape them at the same time.

She also wanted more decorations and ended up gluing pom poms all around the tree's base. Gotta love pom poms to make everything fun. Have you seen our toddler friendly [**Christmas wreath craft**](https://www.funlittles.com/christmas-crafts-for-kids-christmas-wreath/)?

The kids can also add foam stickers and more pom poms on the Christmas tree
