- Ages: 3–6 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: medium
- Time: prep 10 min, activity 30 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class
- Skills: fine-motor, painting, creativity
- Cautions: ingestion-risk

## Materials (one batch)
- 2 piece Foam cups
- Acrylic paint in cheerful colors
- Glitter
- 2 piece Sparkly pipe cleaners
- 2 piece Colorful Christmas jingle bells
- 1 piece Paintbrushes
- 1 piece Tray or covered work surface (household)
- 1 piece Tool to punch holes in the cups (adult use) (household)

## Safety
- Jingle bells are small parts and a choking hazard. Supervise closely and keep loose bells away from children under 3.
- An adult punches the holes in the cups.
- Acrylic paint and glitter are not for mouthing. Keep glitter away from eyes and wash hands after.
- Acrylic paint can stain clothes, so use smocks or old shirts.
- Tuck in or bend over the sharp wire ends of the pipe cleaners.

## Before you start
- Collect foam cups. Used ones are fine if they're washed and dry.

## Steps
1. Paint the outside of a foam cup with cheerful acrylic colors.
2. While the paint is still wet, shake on a big dose of glitter.
3. Set the cups aside to dry, and set out a few colorful jingle bells.
4. Once the paint is dry, set out the sparkly pipe cleaners with the bells.
5. Thread a jingle bell onto a pipe cleaner.
6. Adult: punch 2 holes in the bottom of each cup.
7. Thread the pipe cleaner ends through the holes so the bell hangs inside the cup.
8. Leave the top of the pipe cleaner as a handle for hanging, or bend it into a heart.
9. Hang your jingle cup on the tree.

## Tips
- Christmas crafts don't have to be very involved. This one was perfect for my kids, who were 3 and 5 then, and more importantly they enjoyed the ornament-making process together.
- Add the glitter while the paint is still wet so it sticks and makes the cups extra colorful and cheerful.
- Threading one bell at a time onto the pipe cleaners is great fine motor practice.
- Not a lot of materials! Gotta love these upcycle projects.

Well, we haven't really caught the Christmas crafts fever yet! Last year the kids and I managed to do a few [**Christmas crafts**](https://www.funlittles.com/category/holidays/christmas-holidays/) but we couldn't share them all with you! Not a lot of materials huh? Gotta love these [**upcycle projects**](https://www.funlittles.com/category/upcycle-2/)! { <---Here are a few more of them} Using acrylic paint have the kids paint over the cups using some cheerful colors. Then to make those brightly colored cups extra colorful and cheerful we added a big dose of glitter on them when they were still wet with paint. While the cups are drying set out a few colorful jingle bells. { *You can purchase them at your local craft store or online. Link included above}* Set the materials out for the children. Christmas Crafts don't have to be very involved. This project right here was perfect for my kids { aged 3 and 5 then} More importantly they were able to enjoy the homemade ornament making process together. Once the paint dries, along with the jingle bells set out some sparkly pipe cleaners. Have them thread one bell at a time through some pipe cleaners. { Cue fine motor practice} Punch out 2 holes on the bottom of the foam cup. The children can easily thread a pipe cleaner through the holes in the cups. You can leave the top portion of the pipe cleaners as it is { like a handle to hang on the tree} Or the kids can turn them into hearts for good measure. What do you think?
