# Glowing Chalk Egg Art
> Kids draw patterns or faces on sandpaper egg cut-outs with fluorescent chalk, which glows under a blacklight if you have one. Then string the eggs on baker's twine for an Easter garland that looks bright in daylight too.

- Ages: 4–8 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: medium
- Time: prep 20 min, activity 30 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class · one batch serves about 1 kids
- Skills: fine-motor, patterns, creativity, fluorescence, texture-exploration

## Materials (one batch)
- 1 set Fluorescent (UV-reactive) chalk
- 1 sheet Sandpaper, fine (not coarse)
- 1 piece Blacklight (optional)
- 1 sheet Simple egg outline printable (household)
- 1 piece Pencil or marker for tracing (household)
- 1 piece Scissors (household)
- Baker's twine
- 1 roll Tape (household)

## Safety
- An adult cuts the sandpaper. Cut edges and grit are rough on small hands.
- If you use a blacklight, kids shouldn't stare into the bulb. Keep the cord out of the way of the work table.
- Some chalk dust falls off the eggs. Don't let kids blow the dust or put the chalk in their mouths, and wash hands afterward.
- Chalk is an art supply, not food. Supervise younger children.

## Before you start
- Print a simple egg outline. Trace it on the back of the sandpaper and cut out small oval eggs.
- Pick a spot to hang the finished garland: a wall, a mantel or a plain wall for a banner.

## Steps
1. Set out the sandpaper eggs and the fluorescent chalk.
2. Optional: plug in the blacklight and dim the room lights so the colors glow.
3. Draw stripes, zigzags, dots or even funny faces on your eggs with the chalk.
4. Don't press the chalk hard into the sandpaper, but don't go too light either. Find a good balance.
5. Keep adding colors until your egg is full of patterns, and watch them glow.
6. Pick up the finished eggs gently. A little chalk dust will fall off.
7. Tape the eggs along a length of baker's twine.
8. Hang the garland on a wall or mantel and admire it.
9. After dark, turn off all the lights and shine the blacklight on your garland.

## Tips
- Since we have our blacklight, we did our art project with the light on and it surely did double the fun. The colors fluoresced beautifully.
- We just kept reminding the kids to not really press the chalk onto the sandpaper. I wouldn't lay on the chalk too light either. Just find a good balance.
- Don't forget to buy a fine sandpaper and not a heavy one. The chalk won't last if the paper is too coarse.
- Once you pick up the eggs some of the chalk dust does fall off, but not much honestly. The label says it is dustless.
- You DON'T need a blacklight to have fun with this. The egg garland looks gorgeous in daylight and will make your home festive.
- My 6-year-old was all into creating faces and not into making traditional patterns on the eggs. Let them make it their own.
- I think the best way to enjoy this project is to have the kids create their eggs under black light and then simply hang them on your wall.

### Easter Activity for Kids - how to create Easter art with fluorescent chalk

Use a simple egg outline printable and cut your sandpaper into small oval shapes. Set out your glow chalk and plug in your black light. { We love this backlight we purchased from Amazon and have already used it in our glowing puffy paint art earlier} Now to have fun with this Easter art you DON'T need a backlight. Scroll down and you will see the egg garland looks gorgeous in daylight and will make a your home festive Since we have our backlight we did our art project with the light on and it surely did double the fun.I love that this chalk is really UV reactive . The colors fluoresced beautifully. Both the kids and i enjoyed creating patterns on our sandpaper eggs. My 6 year old was all into creating faces and not into making traditional patterns on the eggs. My 4 year and I did a few egg patterns and all the while she couldn't stop talking about the glow.

We just kept reminding the kids to not really press the chalk on to the sand paper. Don't forget to buy low grit sandpaper and not heavy one. The chalk won't last if the paper is too coarse.

### Making the Easter Art Egg Garland

As I told you without the blacklight the eggs still look beautiful. Once you pick up the eggs some of the chalk dust does fall off. But not much honestly {the label says it is dustless} I wouldn't lay on the chalk too light either. Just find a good balance. String them on some baker's twine and admire their beauty! They look great as a banner on a plain wall too. Simple Easter activity that kids will enjoy. I think the best way to enjoy this Easter art project is to have the kids create their eggs under black light and then simply hang it on your wall. The colors are too good! Just for fun, turn off all the lights after dark and flash some backlight it and enjoy.
