Prop hard-boiled eggs on play dough, paint them black with acrylic paint, then decorate them with gold and silver glitter glue to make shimmering space eggs. A simple Easter egg decorating activity for young kids.
Adult hard-boils the eggs and lets them cool completely before kids handle them.
Decoration only: don't eat eggs that have been painted with acrylic paint and glitter glue, or eggs left out for display.
Check for egg allergies before kids handle the eggs.
Most play dough contains wheat. Check for wheat/gluten allergies, or use a wheat-free dough.
Acrylic paint can stain clothes and surfaces. Cover the table with paper and use smocks.
Before the kids arrive
Hard-boil the eggs and let them cool completely.
Cover the table and put out a sheet of paper with a hunk of play dough for each child.
Steps
Press a hunk of play dough onto a sheet of paper.
Set the hard-boiled egg on top of the play dough so it stands up.
Paint the egg with black acrylic paint, just like a canvas.
Turn the paper to paint the other side, without touching the painted parts.
Let the paint dry for about 3 minutes.
Decorate the black egg with gold and silver glitter glue: dots, lines, stars or swirls.
Pile on as much glitter glue as you like for a golden glop egg.
Leave the eggs on their play dough stands to dry for a day or two.
Tips
Propping the egg on a hunk of play dough on a paper turned out to be a great idea. The kids could paint the egg like a canvas without touching the painted parts, and just turn the paper to paint the other side.from the author
