Kids fill zip-top bags with hair gel, glitter, food coloring and fall bits like leaves, acorns and cinnamon sticks to make squishy autumn sensory bags. Seal with duct tape, then squish them on a table or a sunny window.

⚠️ Safety first

  • Tape all edges with strong duct tape before handing a bag to a child so the contents don't ooze out.
  • Supervise young children; check bags for leaks and throw away any that tear.
  • Hair gel, glitter and small fillers must not go in mouths — an adult does the filling for toddlers.

Before the kids arrive

  • Lay out the fillers in small containers on a tray.

Steps

  1. Fill a quart bag about 3/4 full with hair gel.

  2. Add a good dose of fine glitter in the color you like.

  3. Add big squirts of gel food coloring.

  4. Stir gently inside the bag with a plastic spoon — no need to mix it all the way.

  5. Drop in leaves, confetti, acorns, pom poms or cinnamon sticks.

  6. Squeeze out the extra air and zip the bag shut.

  7. Have an adult tape all the edges with strong duct tape.

  8. Squish the bag on the table or taped to a sunny window.

Tips

  • Let the kids build their own bags from a tray of fillers instead of making them for them.from the author
  • We didn't mix them well, since the bit of yellowish orange gave a really great "fall look".from the author
  • Cinnamon sticks make the bag more brownish.from the author
  • The yellow bag was the most translucent and shiniest — it looks amazing held against sunlight.from the author

Make it your own

  • Green apple-cinnamon bag with red pom poms and cinnamon sticks.
  • Orange bag with fall leaves.
  • Yellow bag with leaves and confetti.
  • Red bag full of acorns.
  • Tape the bags to a sunny window for light play.

Fall Sensory Bags: the original post

T Make colorful squishy sensory bags for the autumn season. Even though the cool weather has not shown up its face still here we are excited to celebrate the oranges, reds and the browns of the fall season. We did notice a few trees changing colors and are eager to enjoy some fall sensory activities. Since the fall sensory jars were a big hit at our house last season we created these gorgeous fall sensory bags this time Materials

Instead of creating the fall sensory bags for the kids, I laid out the materials in small containers on a tray and had the children have fun creating the bags themselves. We had apple/cinnamon pot pourri, fall leaves table scatter, fall confetti, plastic acorns, fall silk leaves, cinnamon sticks for the bits that go inside the bags. materials For the “squishy” part of the squishy bag itself we had hair gel and glitter along with food coloring. The children filled up quart sized Ziploc baggies about 3/4 full with hair gel. Then they added a good dose of fine glitter of color of their choice { although gold goes really well with orange} Then big squirts of orange color gel food coloring. Mix them all together inside the baggie with a plastic spoon. We didn’t mix them well since the bit of yellowish orange gave it a really great “fall look”. fall sensory bags We made 4 squishy bags each with a different emphasis on color

  • Apple Cinnamon green color fall sensory bag with red pom poms and cinnamon sticks.
  • Orange colored fall bag with fall leaves in it
  • Yellow colored bag with more leaves and confetti in it
  • Red bag with many acorns in it.

making squishy bags Please note that the cinnamon sticks does make the bag a more brownish color. squishy bag The yellow and the orange colored fall sensory bag turned out really beautiful sensory activities for fall with squishy bags The yellow bag was pretty translucent making it the most shiniest. When you hold the yellow fall sensory bag against sunlight the bag looks amazing. sensory activities for fall Before handing over the sensory bags to a child please have the edges taped off with a strong duct tape so that the contents does not ooze out. sensory bags We also taped the bags against a sunny window so the children can have fun squishing the bags against the sunlight. squishy bags for fall red sensory bag
