# Kid-Made Burlap Fall Banner
> Kids arrange strips of orange burlap into giant F-A-L-L letters, then glue on silk leaves, real leaves and plastic acorns to make a fall banner for the wall. It works well as a collaborative group project.

- Ages: 4–7 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: medium
- Time: prep 30 min, activity 30 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class · one batch serves about 4 kids
- Skills: letter-recognition, fine-motor, collaboration, nature-exploration

## Materials (one batch)
- 1 roll Orange burlap ribbon roll
- Artificial (silk) fall leaves
- Miniature fall decor items (e.g. plastic acorns)
- Real fall leaves (optional) (household)
- Yarn scraps (optional)
- White glue
- Glossy magazine pages (household)
- 1 piece Scissors (household)
- 1 piece Measuring tape or ruler (optional) (household)
- 1 roll Fall-themed decorative tape (optional)
- Push pins (optional) (household)

## Substitutions
- Instead of work surface cover: Big sheet of butcher paper or a plastic tablecloth (The author's first suggestion. Glossy magazine pages worked better for her because the burlap lifted off without damage.)
- Instead of decorative tape: Push pins (Either route works for mounting the banner on the wall.)

## Safety
- Adult cuts the burlap with scissors.
- Push pins are sharp. An adult mounts the banner and keeps pins out of reach of children.
- Plastic acorns and miniature decor items are small parts. Supervise closely and keep them away from children who still mouth objects.
- Supervise glue use and wash hands afterward.

## Before you start
- Unroll the burlap and cut it into strips for the letters F-A-L-L. Measure the letter height first if you want an accurate banner.
- Gather the fall knick-knacks: silk leaves, real leaves, plastic acorns, yarn and small table decor.

## Steps
1. Cover the floor with glossy magazine pages, butcher paper or a plastic tablecloth.
2. Lay out the cut burlap strips.
3. Arrange the strips on the paper to make giant letters: F-A-L-L.
4. Set out the fall goodies: silk leaves, real leaves, plastic acorns, yarn and table decor.
5. Cover the back of a leaf with white glue. Silk leaves need more glue than real ones.
6. Press the leaf onto the burlap and hold it in place for about 10 seconds.
7. Keep gluing on leaves and decorations, then finish with the rest of the plastic acorns.
8. Leave the banner on the paper to dry overnight.
9. Adult: mount the letters on the wall with decorative tape or push pins.
10. Tape a simple silk-leaf garland above the banner to finish it off.

## Tips
- Since we will be using glue, roll out a big sheet of butcher paper or a plastic tablecloth and lay the burlap pieces on that.
- Pages from a glossy magazine worked better for us. I was able to remove the burlap from the paper without damaging anything.
- The silk leaves need a lot more white glue than the real leaves.
- Leave the banner to dry overnight so the decorations don't fall off. Just a day of drying held everything in place.
- I sort of winged the cutting. For an accurate banner, measure your letters' height and cut accordingly. Two It Yourself has a guide to cutting burlap straight and without fraying.
- This makes a great collaborative activity if you are setting it up for a group.

Since we live in California we are not lucky enough to gather a ton of beautifully colored fall leaves. But we do have a sweet gum tree that changes color during the fall. We hold on to those precious leaves and were thinking of a way to use them in our [***fall activities***](https://www.funlittles.com/category/season/fall-season/) and thus was created this burlap fall banner activity. This f*all activity for kids* will make a great collaborative activity if you are planning to set this up for a group. How to make a burlap fall banner We started off purchasing this orange burlap roll from our local craft store. I was able to locate a **[similar burlap roll](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IB9AW4U/?tag=blmemo-20)** online.

We unrolled them and I cut them into strips to create the letters. I sort of winged it but if you want an accurate banner go ahead and measure your letters' height and cut accordingly. Use this website to learn how to [**cut burlap straight and without fraying.**](http://www.twoityourself.com/2013/11/how-to-cut-burlap-without-fraying-and.html)

Once the cutting was done my 5 year old enjoyed making the giant letters. Since we have been doing a bunch of fall crafts already she was very excited to participate in this one. She set about making the letters F-A-L-L. Quick Tip : Since we will be using glue in the next step, I would roll out a big sheet of butcher paper or plastic table cloth and lay the burlap pieces on that.

Once the letters were created I set out our trusty fall themed knick knacks { silk leaves, [**yarn from our sticky fall tree activity**](https://www.funlittles.com/fall-tree-crafts-sticky-fall-tree-toddlers-can-make/), some table decor, plastic acorns and finally some real leaves} Product links are in the materials section above.

This is when that big sheet of paper will be useful. I found that pages from a glossy magazine worked better for us since I was able to remove the burlap from paper without damaging anything. We went about and gathering our goodies and started simply gluing them on to the burlap. The silk leaves need a lot more white glue than the real leaves. We just covered the back of the leaves with glue and held it in place on the burlap for about 10 seconds.

We finished off the banner with the rest of the plastic acorns.

We left the banner to dry overnight on a large sheet of paper just to make sure our decorations will not fall off. Just a day of drying was great since everything was help up in place. To mount the burlap fall banner on the wall you can go two routes. Use fall themed **[Decorative Tape](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MFL98M8/?tag=blmemo-20)** to hold the fall banner in place or use push pins to mount them.

We finished off our fall decor with a simple garland made using silk leaves and taped them over our fall banner.
