# Jingle Bell Drop
> Wrap recycled paper rolls in holiday gift wrap, number them with foam stickers, and have kids count and drop that many jingle bells into each roll on a metal cookie sheet. It's a festive fine motor, sorting and counting game with a satisfying jingly sound.

- Ages: 3–6 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: low
- Time: prep 20 min, activity 20 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class · one batch serves about 2 kids
- Skills: fine-motor, counting, number-recognition, sorting, colors, sensory-exploration
- Cautions: ingestion-risk

## Materials (one batch)
- 10 piece Empty paper rolls (e.g. toilet paper rolls) (household)
- Holiday gift wrap paper
- Small colored jingle bells
- 1 piece Stainless steel tongs (optional)
- 1 piece Metal cookie sheet (household)
- Foam number stickers
- Clear tape (household)
- 1 piece Scissors (household)
- 3 piece Clear cups or bowls (household)

## Substitutions
- Instead of tongs: Fingers (The author says the bells are just as fun without the tongs.)

## Safety
- Small jingle bells are a choking hazard. Supervise closely at all times, especially with toddlers or any child who still mouths objects.
- Count the bells before and after play so none go missing.
- Adult handles the scissors when cutting the gift wrap.

## Before you start
- Save up empty paper rolls (about 10 per set).
- Wrap each paper roll in festive gift wrap and tape the edges.

## Steps
1. Wrap each paper roll with gift wrap and tape down the edges.
2. Bring out the colorful jingle bells and set them next to the rolls.
3. Sort the bells by color into 3 clear cups.
4. Stick a foam number on each paper roll.
5. Stand the rolls on a metal cookie sheet with the cups of bells and the tongs nearby.
6. Read the number on a roll, pick up that many bells with tongs or fingers, and drop them in.
7. Lift the rolls off and admire the bells that fell onto the tray.
8. Play freely with the bells on the cookie sheet and make lots of jingly sound.

## Tips
- I like to use clear cups to make the bell colors stand out.
- The sound of the bells on the metal cookie sheet was the highlight! It makes this a more engaging fine motor activity.
- Surprisingly, my 6 year old was just as interested in this fine motor activity as my 4 year old.
- The bells are just as fun without the tongs.
- Festive gift wrap from the Dollar Store works great for the rolls.

More jingle bells activities. We can't get enough of all the fine motor activities we can do with these simple jingle bells. They were great in a simple [**sound sensory activity**](https://www.funlittles.com/sensory-activities-for-kids-sound-soup/). We paired with [**scented writing tray**](https://www.funlittles.com/fine-motor-activities-jingle-bells-fine-motor-tray/) and now for some extra jingly math fun we are plaiting them with some up cycled paper rolls { More [**fine motor activities**](https://www.funlittles.com/category/fine-motor-activities/) here} **Paper Rolls** **[Holiday Gift Wrap Paper](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LY6SJEJ/?tag=blmemo-20)** **[Christmas Jingle Bells](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0062TJGRQ/?tag=blmemo-20)** **[Stainless Steel Tongs](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NT6XHV6/?tag=blmemo-20)** **[Cookie Shee](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000G0KJG4/?tag=blmemo-20)t** **Clear Tape** **[Foam Numbers](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JPI5ANK/?tag=blmemo-20)** Now wrap the paper rolls with some festive gift wrapping paper {picked them up at the Dollar Store} and use tape to adhere the edges

Bring out the colorful small jingle bells and place them with the now colorful rolls

I used the same silver tongs we used in the jingle bells fine motor tray activity.

They are just as fun as without the tongs

You can get in some sorting exercises by encouraging your child to separating the bells into different colors. After separating the bells into 3 different clear cups { I like to use clear cups to make the colors stand out } Then we used foam number stickers and stuck on the paper rolls.

Surprisingly my 6 year old was just as interested in this fine motor activity as my 4 year old. The kids picked up the corresponding number of jingle bells and dropped into the paper rolls. The sound of the bells on the metal cookie sheet was the highlight!

Removing the paper rolls and admiring the nicely fallen down bells comes next.

Then the kids were unto themselves playing with the jingle bells on the cookie sheets making lots of sound.

I think the best part is the cookie sheet. The sound the dropping jingle bells make adds to the excitement which makes this a more engaging fine motor activity.

You can also tape all the paper rolls to the wall and place the cookie sheets below them.
