- Ages: 3–6 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: low
- Time: prep 10 min, activity 15 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class
- Skills: art, resist-technique, science, fine-motor

## Materials (one batch)
- 1 piece White crayon
- 1 sheet White sheet of paper
- 1 piece Watercolors (black)
- 1 piece Paintbrush
- 1 piece Cup of water (household)

## Safety
- Crayons and watercolors are art supplies, not food. Supervise younger children so they don't mouth them.
- Black watercolor can stain clothes and surfaces. Cover the table and use smocks if needed.

## Before you start
- For younger kids, draw a simple spider web with the white crayon on a sheet of white paper before they arrive.

## Steps
1. Set out white paper, a white crayon and black watercolors.
2. Draw a simple spider web on the paper with the white crayon, or use a sheet an adult drew ahead.
3. Call it "magic painting" and invite the kids to paint.
4. Wet the brush and pick up some black watercolor.
5. Brush a light wash of black over the whole sheet.
6. Watch the white spider web appear "magically" through the paint.
7. Let the painting dry.
8. Try it again with other watercolor colors.

## Tips
- Throw the word "magic" around and watch their eyes double in size. It got our kids zooming to the table.
- Use a light wash of black watercolor so the white web shows through.
- Talk about the resist technique, what crayons are made of and water's effect on crayons. My 5-year-old found it all fascinating.
- Free-spirited artists can draw their own web; for a 3-year-old, an adult can draw the web ahead of time.

## The original post by TurkeyMom (2013)

We loved any themed [**art projects**,](https://www.funlittles.com/category/art-projects/) especially around the fall season when there are plenty of opportunities for art loving kids to have fun - think about Halloween art projects and [**Halloween crafts,**](https://www.funlittles.com/category/halloween/) then we have the turkey season with cute [**Thanksgiving crafts**](https://www.funlittles.com/category/thanksgiving/) and art and of course [**Christmas crafts!**](https://www.funlittles.com/category/christmas/) Phew, it is going to be busy around the world, right? For today's art project, we are creating a simple spider web. Can you believe after all the numerous [art](https://www.funlittles.com/category/halloween/) projects my kids indulge in we have never done crayon resist art projects? Hmm. We changed that the other day and my 5 year old adored this [**resist art**](https://www.funlittles.com/animal-resist-painting/) technique. **Materials**

- White crayon
- White sheet of paper
- Water Colors (black)

There are multiple variations we did. On one sheet I drew a simple spider web with a white crayon and invited my kids to do some "magic painting". The word magic gave their little feet a couple of wheels an they came zooming. Throw the word magic around and watch their eyes double in size. My 5 year old decided to do her own spider web since she is generally a free spirit when it comes to art project. I love that about her. After drawing her spider web with a white crayon, she proceeded to use a light wash of black water colors and viola! the web presented itself "magically"

Doesn't this spider web look cool? I couldn't take any action shots of my toddler's work since she was very much into another Halloween art project ( tomorrow's post)

I drew a spider web on another white sheet fr my 3 year old. But 5 year old finished that as well! She loved the appearing white colors. I talked to her about the resist technique, what crayons are made of and water's effect on crayons. It was all fascinating to her and she even tried experimenting with various colors.
