# Baked Cinnamon-Sugar Churros & Doughnuts
> Kids measure cinnamon sugar, brush a ready-made dough sheet with butter, then twist strips into churros and cut rings into doughnuts with kid-friendly tools before an adult bakes them for 9-11 minutes. A simple real-cooking activity that helps picky eaters try what they made.

- Ages: 3–8 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: medium
- Time: prep 10 min, activity 30 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group · one batch serves about 2 kids
- Skills: fine-motor, measuring, following-a-recipe, shapes, trying-new-foods
- Cautions: wheat-gluten, dairy

## Materials (one batch)
- 1 piece Pillsbury Crescent seamless dough sheet
- 2 tbsp Sugar (household)
- 1 tsp Ground cinnamon (household)
- 2 tbsp Butter, melted (household)
- 1 piece Measuring spoons (household)
- 1 piece 1-cup measuring cup (household)
- 1 piece Small round cookie cutter (household)
- 1 piece Pizza cutter (household)
- 1 piece Pastry brush (household)
- 2 piece Small bowls (household)
- 1 piece Baking sheet (household)
- 1 sheet Parchment paper (household)

## Substitutions
- Instead of measuring cup: Large round cookie cutter or drinking glass (Any roughly 1-cup-sized circle works for cutting the doughnut rings. Not tested in the post.)

## Safety
- Adult handles the oven and the hot baking sheet. Let the churros and doughnuts cool before kids touch or eat them.
- The pizza cutter is gentler than a knife but still cuts. Supervise kids using it and the cookie cutter.
- Real food: the dough contains wheat and the butter is dairy. Check the dough package label for other allergens before serving.
- Everyone washes hands before handling the dough.

## Steps
1. Adult: preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Measure 2 tbsp sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon into a bowl and stir to make cinnamon sugar.
3. Adult: melt 2 tbsp butter in a small bowl.
4. Unroll the dough sheet and cut it into 4 rectangles with the pizza cutter.
5. Brush melted butter on all 4 rectangles, then sprinkle the cinnamon sugar evenly with a measuring spoon.
6. Churros: stack two rectangles, cut them into strips along the longer side, and twist each strip a couple of times.
7. Doughnuts: stack the other two rectangles, press the 1-cup measuring cup down to cut circles, then cut a hole in each with the small cookie cutter.
8. Lay the churros, doughnuts and little cut-out circles on the baking sheet. Adult: bake at 350°F for 9-11 minutes.
9. Let the treats cool, then enjoy what you made.

## Tips
- A pizza cutter is gentler than a sharp knife and erases the fear of using a regular serrated knife.
- Twisting the churro strips is a great fine motor exercise for the young ones.
- Use a measuring spoon to sprinkle the cinnamon sugar evenly over the dough.
- Letting kids help in the kitchen takes the pressure off trying something new. My picky eater opened up to trying foods just because she played a big role in making the dish.
- Colorful, kid-sized tools make it more fun. My preschooler loved using the 'happy spoons'.

## The original post by TurkeyMom (2013)

*This post is brought to you by Kizmos.* Do your kids like to help you in the kitchen? I use the word *help* very loosely! In any case, they will love using these wonderful **Kizmos kitchen tools** featured in today's post- An easy recipe to make churros and doughnuts . Pre-heat the oven to 350. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and keep ready. Measure and mix the cinnamon and sugar to create the cinnamon-sugar mixture. We used the cheery and bright measuring spoons from Kizmos' "Get Happy" Collection. The tools did justice to their name- they were colorful and my preschooler enjoyed using the "happy spoons".

- Pillsbury Seamless dough sheets
- Sugar - 2 tbsp
- Cinnamon - 1 tsp
- Butter - 2 tbsp - melted

- Kizmos measuring cups
- Kizmos measuring spoons
- Kizmos Pizza cutter
- Baking sheets
- Parchment paper

The joy of cooking increases with gadgets that make cooking look seamless and so much fun. **Kizmos** does just that. There is countless research that recommends to let kids assist you in the kitchen so they are comfortable with the ingredients and so take the pressure off in trying something new . For my picky eater to try any food without rejecting it instantly, is a huge effort. Working with **Kizmos** has broadened the scope for her to try to get more hands on with me in the kitchen which has helped her open herself up to trying foods just because she's played a big role in creating the dish. Next step in this simple recipe, unroll the dough sheet and cut it into 4 rectangles. We used Kizmos Pizza Cutter for this.. They are gentle than a sharp knife and a tool like kizmos cutter erases the fear of using a regular serrated knife. Brush the melted butter on the 4 rectangles and sprinkle evenly with cinnamon - sugar mixture. We again used their measuring spoons to sprinkle evenly on the sheets. We then laid two rectangles one over the other like a pile and cut into strips along the longer side. We twisted them couple of times to make the churros. Great fine motor exercise for the young ones **On to the doughnuts.** We used other 2 rectangles to make a pile one on top of the other and we used the Kizmos Nesting Cups ( the largest 1 cup measure) to create doughnut circles. We used a small round cookie cutter to create the doughnut hole. A quick note: Kizmos Nesting Cups come in a set of 3 and each part ( in total 6) is a measuring cup of a different size.

We laid the churros and the dough nuts on a baking tray and baked at 350 degrees for 9 - 11 minutes.

Time to enjoy the treats made with these fun little tools. In terms of **play ideas**, the cups and spoons also can serve as wonderful scooping and pouring tools in a sensory bin. The nesting cups especially can be used in multiple ways during play and play based learning. Try hiding wooden letters and numbers inside the cups, counting exercises with the cups as storage boxes, ordering according to size, perfect stacking toy for the baby and many more. We were sent a few Kizmos products for this review. All opinions expressed in this post are 100% my own. Only the products we love and enjoy will make it to the blog!
