- Ages: 3–8 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: medium
- Time: prep 10 min, activity 30 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class
- Skills: fine-motor, creativity, observation, recycling

## Materials (one batch)
- 1 sheet Construction paper or cardstock
- Pencil shavings (household)
- Glue (household)
- Paint
- 1 piece Paintbrush
- Markers or crayons (household)

## Safety
- An adult or older child does the sharpening. Sharpener blades are sharp.
- Pencil shavings can have small, pointed pencil-lead tips. Supervise young children so they don't put bits in their mouths.
- Use washable, non-toxic kids' paint and glue. Wash hands after the activity.

## Before you start
- Collect pencil shavings ahead of time and try not to break them into bits. The longer strands you can get, the better.
- If you want the learning extra, save shavings from both round, smooth pencils and pencils with sides.

## Steps
1. Fold or cut a sheet of construction paper or cardstock to card size.
2. Put a round spot of glue where you want a flower.
3. Press pencil shavings onto the glue to make a flower. Use bigger pieces for layers and broken bits for buds.
4. Draw stems, leaves and bees around your flowers.
5. Set the card aside and let the glue dry.
6. Once dry, paint the pencil shavings in the colors of your choice.
7. Let the paint dry, then give your card to someone you love.

## Tips
- Try to collect the pencil shavings without breaking them into bits. The longer strands you can get, the better.
- The broken bits can be used to create buds and the bigger pieces can be used to create layers for a floral design.
- So easy that a child can do this with very little adult supervision.
- Let the artist really work his/her magic by drawing leaves and bees around the flowers.
- It's also a simple learning exercise: see how the shavings look from a round, smooth pencil and how a pencil with sides creates zigzag patterns on the shaving.

When my daughter started drawing zig-zag lines on a piece of paper and started gifting them to me as cards I was enthralled by her creativity and it has become a big part of our lives. She has always done them since for every occasion. I personally feel it makes for the cutest and sweetest gift from a child. We have done many handmade cards in the past for **[Valentines day](https://www.funlittles.com/valentines-day-cards-for-kids/)** and this time we decided to use our pencil shavings to create pretty flowers. This is fun and easy kids activity that can be turned easily into homemade Mother's day cards.

Try to collect the pencil shavings and try not to break them into bits. The longer strands you can get, the better. Fold/cut a construction/card stock paper to a card size. Apply a round spot of glue and create flower designs with the pencil shavings. You can draw leaves and bees and really let the artist work his/her magic and set to let the glue dry. Once dry you can use colors to paint the pencil shavings into the colors of your choice. So easy and a child can easily do this with very little adult supervision. The broken bits can be used to create buds and the bigger pieces can be used to create layers for a floral design. It is also a simple learning exercise to see how the shavings look from a round ,smooth pencil and how a pencil with sides create the zigzag patterns on the shaving. It also creates a very interesting design technique. We hope you try these simple and adorable cards at home and make them for your loved ones.
