# Foil-Wrapped Craft Stick Ornaments
> Kids glue gold or silver foil around craft sticks, then glue the shiny sticks into a star or snowflake. It's a two-step homemade ornament that a 5-year-old can do with very little help.

- Ages: 4–8 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: low
- Time: prep 15 min, activity 20 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class
- Skills: fine-motor, shapes, following-directions

## Materials (one batch)
- 5 piece Thin craft sticks
- Gold foil paper
- Silver foil paper (optional)
- White glue
- 1 piece Scissors (household)
- 1 piece Paper plate (optional) (household)
- Ribbon for hanging (optional)

## Substitutions
- Instead of silver foil: Regular kitchen foil (The author says regular kitchen foil works for the snowflake.)
- Instead of gold foil: Solid gold foil wrapping paper or any gold foil wrapper from a craft store (The author says any of these should work.)

## Safety
- Supervise scissors use, or have an adult cut the foil strips ahead of time.
- Use washable, non-toxic white glue and wash hands after crafting.
- Supervise young children so they don't mouth the glue or the foil.

## Before you start
- Cut the gold and silver foil into strips a little wider and longer than a craft stick.

## Steps
1. Set out the foil strips, craft sticks and glue, and invite your child to make "stars".
2. Apply glue to the reverse side of a foil strip.
3. Wrap the foil taut around a thin craft stick.
4. Seal it and make sure all the ends are closed.
5. Repeat until you have 5 golden sticks for a star.
6. Arrange the craft sticks in your desired shape.
7. Glue the pieces together using white glue.
8. Let the glue dry, then hang your ornament on the tree.

## Tips
- The process has only 2 steps, but the wrapping stage may be a little bit tricky for younger kids. My 5 year old did this with very minimal help.
- Getting to make a star ornament was very exciting. Being told her homemade ornament would go on top of the tree was met with big squeals and wide grins.
- Any gold foil wrapper available at craft stores, or even solid gold foil wrapping paper, should work.
- Regular kitchen foil works for the snowflake. If you want to go fancy, there's a wide variety of craft silver foil in the market.
- Foil-wrapped ornaments made by the kids make a nice personal gift for family. Kids can also keep a set for their own tree one day. (from readers)

The process has only 2 steps, but the wrapping stage may be a little bit tricky for younger kids. My 5 year old did this with very minimal help. I set out the materials and invited her to make "stars". She is very psyched about learning to draw a 5 pointed star without removing her hand from the paper. Getting to make a star ornament was very exciting for her and to top it all it was a gold star! We are in " everything should be golden colored" phase now.

My gold and silver foil paper look a bit different because I did not purchase them here in the United States. But any gold foil wrapper available at craft stores or even solid gold foil wrapping paper should work for these homemade ornaments Christmas crafts. Making the star shape was fun and to be told that her homemade ornament will go on top of the tree was met with big squeals and wide grins. So we did not stop with the gold. Bring on the silver and we made a cute snow flake. Regular kitchen foil will work for the snowflake. If you want to go fancy, you can choose a wide variety of craft silver foil available in the market. Pretty simple huh? Wrap and glue ornaments Feel free to pin these images.
