# Abstract Night Sky Canvas
> Kids criss-cross black-and-white washi tape on a black canvas, then add gold dot stickers at the intersections and gold star and moon sequins in the spaces. The result is a striking piece of night-sky wall art. It's easy process art that pairs well with learning about the night sky or constellations.

- Ages: 4+ · Difficulty: easy · Mess: low
- Time: prep 10 min, activity 30 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class · one batch serves about 1 kids
- Skills: design, geometry-shapes, fine-motor, process-art, night-sky
- Cautions: ingestion-risk

## Materials (one batch)
- 1 piece Black stretched painting canvas
- Black and white washi tape
- Gold round dot stickers
- Gold star and crescent moon sequins
- Mod Podge
- 1 piece Small paintbrush (optional) (household)

## Substitutions
- Instead of star moon sequins: Gold star and moon stickers (The gold stars in the photos may be stickers; self-adhesive shapes skip the glue step. The author couldn't find crescent moon stickers.)

## Safety
- Sequins and small stickers are choking hazards. Supervise closely, especially with younger children.
- Mod Podge is not for mouths. Keep it away from faces and wash hands after gluing.

## Before you start
- Sort gold star and crescent moon sequins out of a loose sequin jar into a small dish for each station.

## Steps
1. Set out a black canvas and a few rolls of black-and-white washi tape.
2. Stick strips of washi tape across the canvas so the lines cross each other.
3. Try to avoid parallel lines, so the tape makes triangles and trapezoids.
4. When you like your design, press a gold dot sticker onto the places where the tapes cross.
5. Fill the empty spaces with gold stars and crescent moons, gluing the sequins down with Mod Podge.
6. Let the glue dry.
7. Hang up your abstract night sky and enjoy!

## Tips
- My older kid stuck to her favorite black-and-white theme. She avoided parallel lines to create more interest, so the canvas ended up with more trapezoids and triangles.
- The gold dots were self-adhesive, but the gold moon and star sequins needed to be glued to the canvas.
- This was supposed to be a simple canvas-and-tape project but turned into a night sky. Let kids decide when the design is done.
- Great companion activity if you are learning about the night sky or constellations.

Abstract Art for Kids: Night sky on canvas I thought our days of abstract art for kids were long gone! The kids are at the age where they are keen on redecorating their rooms since they have developed a strong opinions about room decor and organization. In the past we have created many DIY kids wall art like our first [**t****hanksgiving wall art**](https://www.funlittles.com/thanksgiving-art/) and this [**easy nail polish kids wall art for kids**.](https://www.funlittles.com/picture-frame-wall-art/) This post has the easiest abstract art for kids that can easily be a striking wall art.

**Jump to the Activity** Materials **[Black and White Washi Tape](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EUHVR4Q/?tag=blmemo-20)** **[Black Painting Stretched Canvas](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SMG9ND6/?tag=blmemo-20)** **[Gold Round Color Sticker](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07764G2LC/?tag=blmemo-20)** **[Bulk Loose Sequins](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073JCWS4V/?tag=blmemo-20)** ( good chance you will find the crescent moon in a bulk jar) **[Mod Podge](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009ILH8C/?tag=blmemo-20)** I couldn't locate a gold crescent moon stickers (like the stars and the dots) so I have linked to a jar of sequins. We found out crescent moon sequins from our loose sequins jar. While I have linked to closely related items online, we purchased our materials from our local craft store pre-shutdown! A black canvas and some cute tape was a good good starting point for this abstract art.

From there own the older kid started designing her own canvas with Washi tape. She stuck to her favorite black and white theme and mentioned that she is trying to create more interest in the canvas by avoiding parallel lines. The canvas ended up with more trapezoids and triangles. Once she was satisfied with the design, she stuck the gold dots stickers on the intersections to bring more shine in.

This art project was supposed to be a simple just canvas and tape art project but somehow turned into an abstract art night sky. Once she finished the gold dots sticker, she decided to fill in the empty spaces with moon and stars and thus her new wall art was created! The gold dots were self adhesive but the gold moon and stars sequins needed to be glued to the canvas.

Hang up the abstract art and enjoy! *Great companion activity if you are learning about the night sky or constellations.* Some books!
