- Ages: 2–7 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: low
- Time: prep 20 min, activity 30 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class
- Skills: fine-motor, color-recognition, sorting

## Materials (one batch)
- 2 sheet Black construction paper
- Tissue paper in fall colors (yellow, orange, red)
- Colored cellophane paper (optional)
- 1 piece Glue stick
- 1 piece Tape (household)
- 1 piece Scissors (household)
- Soapy water (optional) (household)

## Substitutions
- Instead of cellophane: Anti-static cellophane stuck on with soapy water (The author says anti-static cellophane won't cling on its own but should stick with soapy water.)
- Instead of cellophane: Skip the cellophane (The framed pumpkin alone already makes a sun catcher.)

## Safety
- An adult handles the scissors and cuts the pumpkin shapes and frames. Older kids can cut their own with supervision.
- Tiny bits of tissue paper and cellophane are a mouthing risk for toddlers, so supervise closely.
- An adult tapes the frames and pumpkins to the window and adds any pieces that are out of reach. Don't let kids climb to reach high windows.

## Before you start
- Cut a basic jack-o-lantern from black paper for each child, with triangle eyes and nose and a toothy mouth. Older kids can cut their own.
- Cut a square frame for each pumpkin from another sheet of black paper.
- Cut a few small bits of cellophane if you're doing the stained glass background.

## Steps
1. Lay out the black jack-o-lantern cut-outs and square frames.
2. Rip the fall-colored tissue paper into tiny bits together.
3. Sort the bits by color if you like.
4. Rub glue stick on the back of the pumpkin and press tissue paper bits over the face holes.
5. Keep adding tissue paper until the eyes, nose and mouth are covered. Turn it over to admire your work!
6. Tape the black frame to a sunny window.
7. Tape the pumpkin inside the frame.
8. Press small bits of cellophane onto the window around the pumpkin for a stained glass effect.

## Tips
- Glue stick was the way to go, since the tissue paper would really rip if regular glue was smeared.
- Ripping the tissue paper into tiny bits was the kids' favorite part, and it's a great fine motor activity.
- Have the kids sort the tissue bits by color first. It's great for color recognition.
- The pumpkin in its frame is already a beautiful sun catcher. The sunlight passing through those yellow-orange eyes is such a treat!
- Non anti-static cellophane was the best purchase: just press it to the window and it sticks. It comes in handy for many other crafts too.
- It works best on a window that gets lots of sun. On a sunny day these pumpkins make the whole room festive.
- A grandparent made these with the grandkids, and they had fun seeing the pumpkins in the windows at night too. (from readers)

## FAQ
**Where can I get non anti-static cellophane?** The post doesn't say where the author bought hers. The materials list links a similar cellophane product. If yours turns out to be anti-static, the author suggests sticking it to the window with soapy water.

What's October without a fun pumpkins crafts for kids. Instead of a traditional [**orange pumpkin craft**](https://www.funlittles.com/halloween-pumpkin-crafts/) like we did last year we resorted to doing a fun silhouette pumpkin craft . It turned out to be a perfect kid- made window decor. If you have an older child you have him/her cut out a basic Jack- o- lantern cut outs. For our pumpkin craft I cut out 2 Jack-O- lanterns from a black paper. I also cute out a couple of square frames from another black colored paper. Together we ripped fall colored tissue paper into tiny bits. The kids loved this part and it was such a great [**fine motor activity**](https://www.funlittles.com/category/fine-motor-activities/). You also have them sort by color *[great for [**color recognition**](https://www.funlittles.com/tag/colors/) ]* I handed a glue stick to the kids and they gladly stuck the tissue paper to the back of the pumpkin cut outs so simple right? It was a perfect toddler pumpkin craft.

The kids decorated their pumpkins as they wished with colored paper. Every now and then my 5 year old would turn the pumpkin craft to admire her work! My toddler lived using her glue stick to adheres the tissue paper. Glue stick was the way to go since the paper would really rip if regular glue was smeared.

Here are the beautiful pumpkins the kids made - spooky cute?

Then we taped the black frame to the window and taped the actual pumpkin inside the frame.

This in itself turned out to be a beautiful pumpkin sun catcher! The sunlight passing through those yellow-orange eyes were such a treat to look! On a sunny day these simple pumpkin crafts just make the whole room very festive! Well we did something more to make this pumpkin craft even more cuter..I cut out a few bits of cellophane paper and we decorated the outside of the pumpkin with them. Stained glass effect!

The cellophane paper we had were not the anti- static ones and they turned out to be the best purchase since all we had to do was just simply press them to the window and they adhere so easily. If you have anti static cellophane you should be able to stick them with soapy water. If you can lay your hands on a "non anti-static" cellophane they will come in handy for many many arts and crafts projects for kids.

Just love these guys!
