# 12 Science Experiments in a Jar
> A collection of easy science experiments from fellow bloggers that can all be done in a jar, from a layered rainbow jar to rain clouds, tornadoes and a lava lamp. Grab your glass jars and pick one to try.

- Ages: 3–6 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: medium
- Time: prep none, activity varies
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class
- Skills: science, observation, density, weather

## Materials (one batch)
- Glass jars (household)

## Safety
- Glass jars can break. An adult handles and fills them, and kids work at a table with close supervision.
- An adult handles any hot water.
- The liquids in these experiments are not for drinking.

## Ideas
- **Rainbow Jar**: A colorful density experiment that stacks liquids into rainbow layers in a jar.
- **Ocean Zones in a Jar**: Use the same density experiment as the Rainbow Jar to teach ocean zones.
- **Pine Cone Experiment in a Jar**: Put pinecones in jars of water and find out why pinecones open.
- **Heat Experiment in a Jar**: A simple heat experiment: watch drops of color spread through water in a jar.
- **Water Cycle in a Jar**: Make rain in a jar to show how it rains.
- **Fog in a Jar**: Make fog in a bottle as a weather experiment.
- **Hurricane in a Jar**: Swirl up your own hurricane inside a jar.
- **Snow Storm in a Jar**: Create a wintry snow storm inside a jar.
- **Tornado in a Jar**: Spin up a tornado in a bottle or jar.
- **Rain Jar with Shaving Cream**: Top water with shaving cream clouds and drip in colored water until it rains through.
- **Sunset in a Jar**: Shine a flashlight through milky water in a jar to see sunset colors.
- **Fireworks in a Jar**: Watch bursts of color swirl down through a jar of water like fireworks.
- **Lava Lamp in a Jar**: A giant pink lemonade lava lamp. 'Jar' is used loosely here, but you can certainly do it in a jar.

## Tips
- You can also use the same density experiment as the Rainbow Jar to teach Ocean Zones.
- I use the term "jar" loosely for the lava lamp. You can certainly do this experiment in a jar.
