An adult sketches a simple beach, ocean and sky on big chart paper. Kids color it in, glue real sand on the beach, splatter-paint the ocean with a toothbrush, add pom-pom clouds and ocean-animal stickers, then use the picture for pretend play.
Watch toddlers closely around the sand. Our little one kept trying to eat it.
Expect sand throwing. Keep sand away from faces and eyes, and pour it low over the paper.
Splatter painting sends paint flying. Cover the table and floor, and dress kids in old clothes or smocks.
Pom-pom balls and foam stickers are small parts. Supervise closely with children who still mouth things.
Before the kids arrive
Sketch a very simple beach scene on the chart paper, divided into three sections: sand area, ocean and sky.
On the sand, draw a couple of umbrellas, chairs, a pet and so on. Add a ship on the ocean, a few birds in the sky and a big, shining, smiling sun.
Steps
Color inside the umbrellas, chairs and other things drawn on the sand.
Spread glue over part of the sand area.
Pour and spread sand from the bowl onto the glue.
Paint the ocean blue with a toothbrush or paintbrush. Switch the toothbrush on to splatter the paint.
Glue blue and white puff balls in the sky.
Stick foam ocean-animal stickers inside the water.
Bring out toy ocean animals and use the picture as a base for ocean pretend play.
Tips
Before starting, ask your child what comes to mind when you say "summer." Ours said sun, then ice creams, and finally beach!from the author
Both kids had so much fun pouring sand on the glue. Of course, the inevitable throwing of sand at the other sister did happen.from the author
Instead of a paintbrush, try a toothbrush with the switch turned on so the paint splatters. My daughter gets a kick out of it.from the author
Use it as a base for ocean pretend play. We had numerous stories about sharks coming out of the ocean and brave princesses casting nets to catch them.from the author
It's a simple way to talk about animal habitats. More than anything, it really got her creative juices flowing.from the author
Make it your own
Add horses on the beach. There are many horse riders on the beaches in India.
Swap the foam stickers for drawn or cut-out ocean animals.
Paint with a regular paintbrush for a less splattery ocean.
The story behind it
By TurkeyMom · July 2012
Mommy sketched a very simple beach scene: sand, ocean and sky. We glued down sand, used pom pom balls for the sky and foam stickers for the ocean animals. Good piece of art!
