- Time: prep 10 min, activity 30 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class
- Skills: fine-motor, sensory-exploration, colors, pretend-play
- Cautions: food-dye, ingestion-risk

## Materials (one batch)
- Clean, fresh snow (household)
- Water (household)
- Food coloring
- Old sippy cups, spray bottles and squeeze bottles (household)
- Cookie cutters (including a snowman shape) (household)
- 1 piece Old aluminum tray (household)
- 1 piece Baking tray (household)
- 1 piece Muffin pan (household)
- 1 piece Ice cream scoop (household)
- Spoons (household)
- Buttons and beads (optional)
- Snow suits and boots (household)

## Safety
- Dress kids warmly in snow suits and boots, and keep outdoor time short when it is biting cold.
- Buttons and beads are choking hazards. Keep them away from toddlers who still mouth things, and supervise closely.
- Snow cookies and snowcakes are pretend, not food. Don't let kids eat the snow or the colored water.
- Food coloring can stain hands, clothes and surfaces.
- Indoor snow melts fast. Wipe up drips so floors don't get slippery.

## Before you start
- Mix water and food coloring, then pour the colored water into old sippy cups, spray bottles and squeeze bottles.

## Steps
1. Gear up in snow suits and boots and head outside.
2. Place some cookie cutters on the snow.
3. Squeeze or spray colored water only on the inside of the cutters.
4. Scoop up good snow into an old aluminum tray and bring it indoors.
5. Press snow into a snowman cookie cutter, lift the cutter off and decorate the snowman with buttons and beads.
6. Cut snow cookies with cookie cutters on a tray and decorate them with squeezes of colored water.
7. Roll snowballs and squeeze color on top.
8. Use an ice cream scoop to fill a muffin pan and make snowcakes.
9. Scoop snow with spoons and move it back and forth between the pans.

## Tips
- Little kids can lose interest outdoors in the snow for a long time, especially when it's biting cold. Bring some snow indoors so the play can continue.
- Placing cookie cutters on the snow and squeezing only inside them gave my 4-year-old tons of fine motor practice.
- The snow was dense enough to hold its shape while the girls worked on decorating.
- Can't build a snowman outside? Make a cookie cutter snowman instead.
- Spoons made a great scoop for my 15-month-old to transfer the snow back and forth between the pans. She could hardly take her hands off the snow.
- We ended the play with some super yummy hot cocoa. Just what I needed!

Winter Activities for Kids : Make snow cookies How can you make outdoor [**winter activities for the kids**](https://www.funlittles.com/category/season/winter-season/) more fun? Snow is fun and all for a while but little kids can lose interest being outdoors in the snow for a long time, especially it is biting cold. So after we painted the snow outdoors we brought some inside for some creation time. I know lot of places are gearing up for spring. But it snowed hard where I live. So we have a super fun snow play post. When it snows its hard to resist not going out. Our typical snow day activities include making a snowman and sledding in the backyard and taking pictures of all the snow covered rooftops, bushes, trees and cars and gazing at Natures incredible beauty. This snow day we changed things up a bit. We geared up , suits , boots and all. I made some colored water ( water + Food coloring), put in some containers – Old sippy cups, spray bottles, squeeze bottles and some cookie cutters. I placed some cookie cutters on the snow and my 4 yr old had tons of fine motor practice trying to squeeze only on the inside of the cutters.

We played for a bit and then brought the snow indoors for our play to continue. Use an old aluminium tray and scoop up the good stuff and set it for a extended activity. Since we couldn't build a snowman outside we we settled on making a cookie cutter snowman and decorate him with buttons and beads.

Daddy jumped right in and him and the girls decided to make snow cookies. The snow was dense enough to hold its shape while the girls worked on decorating.

Snow cookies, snow balls, snow melts call it whatever you want, its just pure fun ! As you can see all these snow activities fun can be had with just simple household materials.

I gave them an ice cream scoop and some spoons and a muffin pan. Before I knew we were already making snowcakes !

It was good **fine motor play & sensory play for my 15 month old**. She could hardly take her hands off the snow. The spoons made a great scoop for her to transfer the snow back and forth between the pans.

In all, it was a fun day and we ended the play with some super yummy hot cocoa , just what I needed ! Yum!
