> Write feeling words and their synonyms in white crayon on card stock circles and petals. Paint over them with liquid watercolors to magically reveal the words, then add magnetic tape and sort the petals into synonym flowers on a baking sheet or the fridge.

- Ages: 5–8 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: medium
- Time: prep 25 min, activity 30 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class
- Skills: literacy, synonyms, vocabulary, emotions, fine-motor, art

## Materials (one batch)
- Plain white card stock paper
- 1 piece White crayon
- Liquid watercolors
- Paint brushes
- 1 piece Divided tray or palette for the paint (household)
- 1 piece Scissors (household)
- 1 roll Magnetic tape with sticky back
- 1 piece Metal baking sheet (household)
- 1 piece Laminator (optional)

## Safety
- Liquid watercolors can stain clothes, hands and surfaces. Cover the table and use smocks.
- Adult does any cutting with sharp scissors and runs the laminator, which gets hot.
- Small magnetic tape pieces can be a choking hazard for younger siblings. Keep the finished pieces away from toddlers who mouth things.

## Before you start
- Cut 4 circles from card stock to serve as the flower centers.
- Cut petals from plain card stock, about 5 per center.

## Steps
1. Lay out the cut circles and petals.
2. With a white crayon, write one feeling word on each center: happy, sad, angry and worried.
3. Talk together: say a word and have the child name other words that mean the same thing.
4. Write 5 synonyms for each word on the petals with the white crayon.
5. Paint each petal and center with liquid watercolors and watch the word appear.
6. Set all the painted pieces aside to dry.
7. Stick a piece of magnetic tape on the back of each petal and center.
8. Mix up the centers and petals on a baking sheet.
9. Choose the petals that mean the same as 'happy' and build a happy flower around its center.
10. Repeat for the other words, then move the flowers to the refrigerator.

## Tips
- Choose the words you and your child can come up with. Our synonyms were a mix of words she knew and a few I'd love for her to learn.
- Resist art is such an easy, gorgeous and magical art activity. The wax crayon resists the water-based liquid colors, so the word is revealed 'magically'.
- The painted petals didn't take very long to dry.
- You can laminate the petals for a longer 'shelf life'. I skipped this and went straight to the magnetic tape.
- Happy synonyms we used: glad, glee, cheery, smiling, joyful.

Make resist art spring flowers, learn about synonyms and finally decorate your refrigerator with magnetic synonym flowers With spring in full swing all around us, it is time to create with flowers. Oh how we love spring - the colors and blooms just sweeps us off with their cheery beauty. We adored making [**spring potions**](https://www.funlittles.com/spring-activities-explore-outdoors-and-make-flower-potions/) and loved our [**spring sheep craft**](https://www.funlittles.com/spring-art-egg-carton-sheep/). We have also combined learning with seasonal activities. Last season my children loved their [**color matching play dough garden**](https://www.funlittles.com/spring-craft-color-matching-garden/) and their **ABC garden**. Check out the links! For today's spring craft.. **Materials** **[Card stock Paper](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006HXSTC/?tag=blmemo-20)** **[White Crayon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004YO15/?tag=blmemo-20)** **[liquid Watercolors](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0042SWTUU/?tag=blmemo-20)** **[Brushes](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0035XKDJM/?tag=blmemo-20)** **[Laminator (optional)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0010JEJPC/?tag=blmemo-20)** **[Magnetic Tape](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00114LU8K/?tag=blmemo-20)** Cut out 4 circles to serve as the center of the flowers. Then cut out your petals using plain card stock paper. ` On each centers I wrote down a word ( happy, sad, angry and worried) with a ***white crayon***. On the corresponding petals I wrote down synonyms of each word. For this my older, 5.5 years and I had a discussion. I gave her a word and she told me 2 other words that means the same. So the 5 synonyms were a combination of the words she knew and a few other I'd love for her learn. Here is a quick list. Choose the words you and your child can come up with. **Happy**

- Glad
- Glee
- Cheery
- Smiling

Spring Crafts for kids : Flowers Emotions! Then it was resist art time. Resist art technique is such an easy, gorgeous and magical art activity for kids. We have explored this before through [**crayon resist spider web**](https://www.funlittles.com/halloween-art-projects-crayon-resist-spider-web/), [**glue resist art**](https://www.funlittles.com/art-activities-kids-glue-resist-art/) and recently our **[cracked wax art](https://www.funlittles.com/art-activities-kids-cracked-wax-resist-art/).** I set out some of our favorite vibrant liquid watercolors along with some gorgeous brushes. Once the petals are painted with liquid watercolors, the word is revealed "magically". The wax crayon resists the water based liquid colors!

That's art, craft, fine motor and learning all rolled in one.

Once we painted all our petals and centers, we set them to dry for a bit. It didn't take very long to dry.

At this point you can laminate your petals for a longer "shelf life" of the craft so to speak. I skipped this part and went ahead and attached pieces of magnetic tape with sticky backs.

I then set out the centers with the words "happy, sad, angry and worried" along with the petals all mixed up on a baking sheet.

Then my 5.5 year old chose the words that mean the same as "happy" and created her "happy flower"

Here is her flower made with synonyms of happy.

Continue the same for the rest of the words and make gorgeous spring flowers. After we created the flowers on the baking sheet, she moved them all to the refrigerator.

Fun with magnetic spring flowers right? Now your refrigerators looks all bright and colorful.

Thanks for reading!
