- Ages: 3–7 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: medium
- Time: prep 20 min, activity 1 hr
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class · one batch serves about 1 kids
- Skills: sizes, proportions, symmetry, construction, planning, pretend-play, fine-motor

## Materials (one batch)
- Toilet paper (TP) rolls (household)
- Kitchen (paper towel) rolls (household)
- 1 piece Empty Lysol container (household)
- Construction paper
- 1 piece Big cardboard tray or box lid (household)
- Paint
- 1 piece Paintbrush
- Glue
- 1 piece Cello tape (clear tape)
- 1 piece Scissors (household)
- 1 piece Cup or lid to trace circles (optional) (household)
- 1 piece Black marker (optional) (household)
- Toy princess figurines (optional)

## Substitutions
- Instead of lysol container: A kitchen roll or any large, clean cardboard cylinder (Not from the post. Suggested for groups where not every child has an empty container.)

## Safety
- Use only an empty, rinsed Lysol (or other cleaning product) container. Adult checks that no disinfectant residue is left before kids handle it.
- An adult cuts the cardboard rolls to shorter heights. Cardboard tubes are hard for small hands to cut safely.
- Small princess figurines are a choking hazard for children under 3. Supervise younger siblings during play.
- Use washable kids' paint and supervise painting.

## Before you start
- Collect TP rolls, kitchen rolls, an empty Lysol container and a big cardboard tray or box lid for each castle.
- Empty and rinse the Lysol container.

## Steps
1. Paint the TP rolls, kitchen rolls and Lysol container, then let them dry.
2. Plan your castle layout on the cardboard base. An adult cuts a few rolls shorter to create symmetry and structure.
3. Trace a circle on construction paper for each pillar's top. Make it at least 2 times the TP roll's diameter, then cut it out.
4. Cut into the circle from the edge to the center, overlap it into a cone and secure it with tape.
5. Glue the tops to the pillars and let them dry.
6. Put the pillars together on the base and build your castle.
7. Cut doors and windows from construction paper and draw lines on them, then stick them on the towers.
8. Add a few construction paper trees and bushes to create a scenery.
9. Add a few princesses and create your play scene.

## Tips
- Can you believe that list? You probably have it all at home already.
- You might have to cut a few rolls to create symmetry and structure.
- The circle for each castle top has to be at least 2 times the TP roll's diameter.
- Did you notice my Lysol can? An empty container makes a great big central tower.
- Playing with it afterward is the best part of any activity!
- Plan for drying time. One reader had to wait for the painted tubes to dry before finishing, so a group may need two sessions. (from readers)

## The original post by TurkeyMom (2013)

My 4 year old loves building, crafting and playing pretend with princesses. This activity combines all of the three. We love building with Legos and slottos and blocks and are always looking for new ways to play. Whats better than our all time favorite and Oh! so useful, paper rolls.. Paper roll crafts are an all time favorite. See our [**recent paper roll craft post**](https://www.funlittles.com/paper-roll-craft-airplane/) where we made airplanes. Have I already mentioned how versatile these guys are. I’m telling you – Endless possibilities !

### A super easy paper roll craft project that teaches sizes, proportions, symmetry, construction, planning and layout and provides wholesome entertainment.

- TP rolls
- Kitchen rolls
- An empty Lysol container
- Construction paper
- A big cardboard tray/ lid for base
- Paint
- Glue
- Cello tape

Can you believe that list? You got it all, don’t you? First things first - Color the rolls and plan a layout. You might have to cut a few rolls to create symmetry and structure. Use the cardboard as your base to hold the structure. Did you notice my Lysol can?

Create the tops for each of the pillars. Trace out a circle, it has to be atleast **2 times the TP roll's diameter.** Cut into the circle at its radius to create the castle tops. Secure with a tape.

Glue the tops to the pillars and let dry. Put the pillars together and build your castle.

Add doors, windows and a few trees and bushes to create a scenery.

 Easy or what?

Add a few princesses and create your play scene.
