# Trivet Turkey
> Paint a cork trivet in bright feather sections, then glue on a cork coaster head, googly eyes and a construction-paper beak, wattle and feet to build a colorful turkey. This is an easy, low-mess Thanksgiving craft that also works on fine motor skills.

- Ages: 3–7 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: low
- Time: prep 25 min, activity 30 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class · one batch serves about 1 kids
- Skills: fine-motor, colors, painting, vocabulary

## Materials (one batch)
- 1 piece Cork trivet (round)
- 1 piece 4" cork coaster
- Acrylic paint set
- Solid tempera paint sticks (Kwik Stix) (optional)
- 1 piece Paintbrushes
- 1 piece Pencil (household)
- 2 piece Googly eyes
- Construction paper (orange, yellow, pink or red)
- Glue (household)
- 1 piece Scissors (household)

## Substitutions
- Instead of acrylic paint: Solid tempera paint sticks (Kwik Stix) (Low-mess 'paintless' painting. The author got almost similar results with both.)
- Instead of cork coaster: Colored paper circle (For the mini turkey: a coaster becomes the body and a brown paper circle becomes the head.)

## Safety
- Googly eyes are small parts and a choking hazard. Supervise closely with young children who still mouth things.
- Acrylic paint can stain clothes and surfaces. Cover the table and use smocks or old clothes.
- Adult handles scissors or pre-cuts the paper pieces for younger children.

## Before you start
- Cut a beak, wattle and feet for each turkey from construction paper.
- For a group, paint the trivets ahead (or in an earlier session) so they are dry before building.

## Steps
1. Gently draw pencil lines to divide the cork trivet into sections, like feathers fanning out.
2. Fill in each section with a different color of paint or Kwik Stix.
3. Let the paint dry.
4. Set out the painted trivet, a cork coaster, googly eyes and the paper beak, wattle and feet.
5. Glue the cork coaster onto the lower middle of the trivet for the turkey's head.
6. Stick on the googly eyes.
7. Glue the beak and wattle onto the head and the feet at the bottom. Name each turkey part as you go.
8. Show off your finished colorful turkey.

## Tips
- The trivet is for the body and the coaster is for the head of the turkey.
- Based on the age of the child, you decide how much the supervising adult needs to be involved.
- Children can identify the parts of the turkey while gluing them on. It's a great fine motor and learning activity.
- Peel-and-stick wiggle eyes work great when you want to keep it quick and easy.
- A set of 24 coasters comes in handy when the kids want to try out multiple designs.
- We got almost similar results with both the low-mess solid paint sticks and the regular acrylic paint.
