# Heart Butterfly Treat Holders
> Wrap half a kitchen paper roll in tissue paper and add foam heart wings, pipe cleaner antennae, googly eyes and a smile to make a Valentine butterfly. Close off one end and tuck in a treat bag to turn it into a candy holder for classmates.

- Ages: 3–6 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: low
- Time: prep 15 min, activity 20 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class
- Skills: fine-motor, insect-body-parts, problem-solving

## Materials (one batch)
- 0.5 piece Kitchen paper roll, cut in half (household)
- Tissue paper
- 2 piece Foam hearts (glitter foam works great)
- 1 piece Pipe cleaners
- 2 piece Googly eyes
- 1 piece Marker (household)
- 1 piece Tape (household)
- 1 piece Knife (adult use) (household)
- Glue and brush (optional) (household)
- 1 piece Small cellophane treat bags (optional)
- Small treats (optional)

## Substitutions
- Instead of glue: Roll and tuck the tissue paper (Roll the tissue paper around the tube and fold the edges into both openings. No glue needed.)
- Instead of kitchen paper roll: Toilet paper roll (Works for the craft, but the author suggests avoiding toilet rolls if you are using it as a treat holder.)

## Safety
- Adult cuts the slits with a knife. Do this before kids arrive or well out of their reach.
- Googly eyes are small parts and a choking hazard. Supervise closely with younger children.
- If you use it as a treat holder, keep treats in a closed treat bag. The author recommends kitchen paper rolls rather than toilet rolls for this ('just in case..feels better').
- Check classroom allergy and food rules before filling holders with treats to share.

## Before you start
- Cut kitchen paper rolls in half, one half per child.
- Adult: cut the two wing slits in each tube with a knife.
- If making treat holders, fill and close the treat bags.

## Steps
1. Set out the materials and give a riddle: a cute insect that begins with the thing you love to eat with bread. Butterfly! Let the kids think about how to make one.
2. Roll tissue paper around the paper tube and fold the edges inside the two holes. You can glue it on if you like.
3. Adult: use a knife to cut 2 slits in the tube for the wings.
4. Slide a foam heart into each slit for the wings.
5. Curl a pipe cleaner into antennae and tape it inside the top of the roll.
6. Stick on googly eyes and draw a smiling mouth.
7. Talk about the butterfly's body parts: wings, antennae, eyes.
8. For a treat holder: close off one end of the roll and slip in a treat bag full of treats.

## Tips
- Instead of just giving instructions, set out the materials and let kids think about how to make a butterfly. Involving them in the process discussion stretches their attention span and enthusiasm.
- In our house the best kind of 'invitation to play' is a fun animal riddle.
- We started off gluing the tissue paper, then switched to just rolling it on the tube and folding the edges inside. Easier!
- If you're using it as a treat or candy holder, stay away from toilet rolls and use kitchen paper rolls cut in half (just in case, feels better).
- It's a very involved fine motor activity, so expect to help with the knife slits and taping the antennae.
- Attaching the body parts makes a great little science lesson.

No [**Valentine’s day crafts**](https://www.funlittles.com/category/holidays/valentines-day-holidays/) series can go on without a **[paper roll craf](https://www.funlittles.com/tag/paper-rolls/)t**, right? So for the next Valentine’s day activity we have a wonderful “Heart Butterfly” *Valentine craft* that can double up as a candy holder for all the kids in the class ( or just for your kids) Either way this is an easy one..

- Kitchen paper rolls cut in halves
- Tissue Paper
- Foam Hearts
- Pipe Cleaners
- Googly eyes

Big A, my very discerning girl when it comes to “accepting” play invitations was curious to find out what we are going to make with rolls again. I*nstead of just instructing her on the process of creating a butterfly, I set out the materials and had her think how we can make one. I have found that with an adult directed craft activity, involving the kids in the process discussion is a great way to extend their attention span and enthusiasm in the activity.*

This time I just mentioned we are making her a cute insect. Lady bug? Nope, something which begins with the thing you love to eat with bread. Butterfly. Yay! You see in our house the best kind of “ invitation to play” is a fun animal riddle.

### Here is how we did our fun and easy Valentine’s day craft.

Just so you know, we used kitchen paper rolls cut into half for this craft. If you are thinking of using this as treat/candy holder better to stay from toilet rolls ( just in case..feels better) We started off gluing the tissue paper on the paper roll and then switched to just rolling the tissue paper on the paper tube and folding the edges inside the 2 holes of the roll.

Using a knife we cut out 2 slits on the either ends of the paper roll. Then we attached the butterfly’s body parts>. Science lesson staring at us Foam hearts for wings, pipe cleaners for antennae and googly eyes and a smiling mouth. Since this craft was a very involved fine motor activity I helped Big A through out the way with the knife slits, taping the antennae inside the paper roll etc, so sorry no action shots.

Now you can easily turn these *Valentine's day crafts* into treats holders by closing off one end of the paper roll and inserting a treat bag full of well..treats..

We are having a great time making Valentine's day crafts and have a few more to share. Big A's pre school class has a fun time celebrating Valentine's day by exchanging small treats and favors with other kids. This may be the year where we bring home made treats/favors?
