- Ages: 3–8 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: low
- Time: prep 10 min, activity 30 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class
- Skills: fine-motor, creativity, color-choice

## Materials (one batch)
- Aluminum foil (household)
- Valentine ribbon
- Pipe cleaners (sparkly)
- Yarn
- 1 piece Tape (household)
- 1 piece Scissors (household)
- Colorful shoe laces (optional)
- Paint or markers (optional)

## Substitutions
- Instead of valentine ribbon: Yarn or colorful shoe laces (Suggested by the author for wrapping.)
- Instead of pipe cleaners: Paint or markers (For younger children who would rather color their hearts than wrap them.)

## Safety
- Pipe cleaners have wire ends that can poke. Tuck or twist the ends in, and supervise younger children.
- An adult handles the scissors when cutting foil strips and ribbon.
- Supervise children who still mouth small craft items.

## Before you start
- Set out the wrapping supplies (pipe cleaners, ribbons, yarn) in a tray so kids can choose.
- For a large group, consider twisting the foil hearts ahead of time.

## Steps
1. Cut strips of aluminum foil.
2. Twist each foil strip into a rope and shape it into a heart. Make hearts of different sizes.
3. Choose a wrapping supply: sparkly pipe cleaners, ribbon or yarn.
4. Wrap pipe cleaners carefully around the foil heart, mixing colors as you go.
5. Adult: for ribbon, tape one end of the ribbon to the foil heart.
6. Wrap the ribbon around and around the heart until it is covered.
7. Try wrapping more hearts with yarn or a different ribbon.
8. Tape the finished hearts to the wall to display them.

## Tips
- I started her off by taping one end of the ribbon to the foil heart and had her continue the rest. It held the ribbon in place and avoided frustration!
- My 5 year old really got into creating sparkly hearts from foil, and with my help we made plenty of hearts.
- Set out many craft supplies and let the child choose how to decorate or wrap each heart.
- Well, everything has got to be multi-colored, right? Mix pipe cleaner colors on one heart.

We cut strips of aluminum foil and twisted them to make hearts of different sizes. My 5 year old really got into this process of creating beautiful sparkly hearts from foil and with my help we were able to make plenty of hearts. I set out many craft supplies for her to choose from to decorate or wrap her hearts. You can even set out paint or markers for younger children who would simply love to color their hearts.

She chose her sparkly pipe cleaners first and went about wrapping them carefully.

Well, everything has got to be multi-colored right?

The soft ribbons were up next. When she chose the ribbon, I started her off by taping one end of the ribbon to the foil hearts and having her continue the rest. It held one end of the ribbon in place to avoid frustration!

We continued with couple of different types of ribbons and ended up with these beauties.

We displayed them on our wall by simply taping them.

You can also try wrapping them with yarn or colorful shoe laces.
