- Ages: 3–8 yrs · Difficulty: medium · Mess: medium
- Time: prep 30 min, activity 30 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class
- Skills: fine-motor, creative-art, colors
- Cautions: ingestion-risk

## Materials (one batch)
- Crayons (broken bits work great)
- 1 piece Foam hearts (cut from foam sheets)
- 1 piece Chenille stems
- 1 piece Hole punch (household)
- Glitter glue
- Wax paper (household)
- 1 piece Iron (household)
- 1 piece Grater (household)
- Small plates or bowls for shavings (household)
- 1 piece Scissors (household)

## Safety
- Adult handles the iron at all times. Keep kids' hands away from the hot iron and from the wax paper right after pressing.
- Adult does the grating. The author stepped in because grating was hard for her child.
- Crayon shavings are small bits. Supervise young children so they don't put them in their mouths.
- Foam can warp or melt under a hot iron. Test one heart first on a low setting and press briefly.

## Before you start
- Cut heart shapes from foam sheets.
- Adult: grate the crayon bits into shavings and sort them by color onto small plates.

## Steps
1. Adult: grate the crayons into shavings and put each color on its own small plate.
2. Set out the plates of shavings and the foam hearts in an assembly line.
3. Sprinkle crayon shavings onto a foam heart.
4. Cover the heart with a sheet of wax paper.
5. Adult: press the iron down on the wax paper and lift it straight up. Don't slide it or hold it down too long.
6. Pull back the wax paper to see the melted crayon art.
7. Decorate the edges or write a message with glitter glue.
8. Punch a hole and loop a chenille stem through it to hang your heart.

## Tips
- Just press and lift up the iron. If you slide the iron or press it down too long, you create a smear, so be advised.
- This is the day to finally show some love to those broken, abandoned crayon bits that nobody wants to use.
- Grating was a little bit hard for my child, so I stepped in and turned to my good ol' grater for help.
- A simple assembly line makes the project easier. We went all out, made lots of crayon shavings and wanted to use it all up!
- Turn the finished hearts into a handmade Valentine's gift for friends and family.
- If grating feels like too much work, a reader melts leftover crayon bits in a muffin tray to make chunky crayons instead. (from readers)

Valentine's day crafts for kids are popping up all over the blog world. We have a simple melted crayon 'hearts' art. It is an easy, fun and a beautiful Valentine's day art project for kids. It can be converted into a cute Valentine's day craft and in turn into a handmade Valentines day gift for friends and family.. This was the day we were finally going to show some love to those broken, abandoned crayon bits that nobody wants to use and made some melting crayons on foam hearts.

- Crayons
- Foam hearts
- Chenille stems
- Hole punch
- Glitter glue
- Wax paper
- Iron

We set up this simple assembly line for the ease of doing our project. We just went all out and made lots of crayon shavings and wanted to use it all up ! haha !

We grated the crayons to create some crayon shavings. Now this a little bit hard for Big S , so I stepped in and turned to my good ol’ grater for help. Since Valentine's day is just around the corner, we did heart cutouts from foam sheets for our project.

Sprinkle the crayon shavings onto the foam hearts and to make it stick, cover it with a wax paper and iron. Just press and lift up the iron and pull back the wax paper. You can create a smear if you slide the iron or press it down too long, so be advised.

Use glitter glue to decorate the edges or write on the hearts. Punch out holes, and use chenille stems to make a hanging display of your melted crayon hearts creation.

Now that's a gorgeous piece of ART !
