Paint the rim of a paper plate (center cut out) green, then dip colorful glitter pom poms in glue and stick them all around to make a hanging wreath. Simple enough for toddlers, and a nice chance to practice patterns.

⚠️ Safety first

  • Pom poms are small enough to be a choking hazard. Supervise toddlers closely and keep pom poms away from mouths.
  • Adult cuts the center out of the paper plates.
  • Acrylic paint is not the same as washable kids' paint and can stain clothes. Use smocks or old clothes and wash hands after.

Before the kids arrive

  • Cut the center out of one paper plate per child.

Steps

  1. Set out the colorful glitter pom poms, green paint and the paper plates with the centers cut out.

  2. Paint the paper plate ring green all the way around.

  3. Let the paint dry, about 10 minutes.

  4. Pour some glue onto a spare paper plate.

  5. Dip a pom pom in the glue and stick it onto the green ring.

  6. Keep going until pom poms go all around the plate. Try making a color pattern.

  7. Let the glue dry, then adult adds a ribbon loop for hanging.

  8. Hang up your wreath!

Tips

  • We have been using water-based acrylic paint in place of regular washable kids' paint. I feel that the acrylic colors are brighter.from the author
  • The paint dried pretty quick, I'd say 10 minutes.from the author
  • All she did was dip the pom poms in glue and stick them to the plate. Simple enough for a toddler!from the author
  • Great opportunity to show patterning and sequencing with the pom pom colors.from the author
  • My 5 year old wanted to join in the fun too, so it works for siblings of different ages.from the author

Make it your own

  • Make two wreaths, write 'Merry' in the center of one and 'Xmas' in the other, and hang them together on one ribbon.

Thank you so much for the idea! I have been searching high and low for crafts for my 21 month old granddaughter and don't seem to find many I believe will hold her attention..... She gets bored quickly with activities but I am excited to try this one.
