Trace a child's silhouette on a wooden oval plaque, paint it with colored and black chalkboard paint, and hang it as a little chalkboard. Kids can answer 'How was school?' or write down how they feel.

⚠️ Safety first

  • An adult handles the chalkboard paint. Follow the label on the can, work in a well-ventilated area, and keep paint away from mouths.
  • An adult cuts out the silhouette with scissors.
  • Wash brushes and hands after painting.
  • If you hang the plaque on a wall, fix it securely. Our photos show it standing on a shelf.

Before the kids arrive

  • Print a child silhouette, or make your own child's silhouette.
  • Cut out the silhouette.
  • Plan for the plaque to dry overnight before anyone writes on it.

Steps

  1. Adult: cut out the printed silhouette.

  2. Lay the silhouette on the wooden plaque and trace the outline with a regular pencil.

  3. Pour some tintable chalkboard paint into a disposable container. Add your chosen acrylic paint until you're happy with the color.

  4. Paint the plaque around the silhouette with the colored chalkboard paint. Use a detail brush to get around the outlines.

  5. In another container, mix chalkboard paint with black acrylic paint. Add more black until you get a true black instead of grey.

  6. Paint the silhouette and the border black.

  7. Let the plaque dry overnight, even though the paint dries really fast.

  8. Treat the surface by rubbing white chalk over the whole plaque.

  9. Write a prompt like 'How do you feel today?' or 'How was school?' and invite your child to write their thoughts all around it.

  10. Hang or set it near the homework desk, play desk, reading area or bedroom.

Tips

  • There aren't any measurements for the color. I added the pink to the chalkboard paint until I was satisfied with the color.from the author
  • You would probably need a couple of different kinds of brushes to get around the outlines. I just did my best with the paint brushes I had on hand.from the author
  • The tintable chalkboard paint is white-grey, so you might need more black acrylic paint to get a true black for the silhouette.from the author
  • Hang it anywhere you think the kid spends a fair amount of time.from the author
  • My older one pretty much dreads the 'How was school?' question. This plaque turns it into something she can answer in her own words.from the author

Make it your own

  • Make your own child's silhouette instead of using a printable.
  • Use it to express feelings and emotions. Write feeling words like Happy, Tired and Excited on the silhouette, as in our photos.
  • Tint the chalkboard paint any acrylic color you like instead of pink.

DIY Chalkboard Silhouette Plaque: the original post

T What’s not to like about a DIY chalkboard project? So many of us have fond memories chalk dust and chalkboard. Something very rewarding and satisfying about writing with a piece of chalk is always present. There could be smart classrooms without any need for chalkboard filled with iPads, computers and projects but chalkboards will never go out of style. With the kids going back to school for a new school year, the most infamous question is back in session! Which question you ask? ” How was school? What did you do today?” Oh dear! My older one pretty much dreads that questions and she is only going to be only 7! How many more years of that question does she have to endure haha. So here is a simple DIY Wall Art project that doubles as much more than that.

We grabbed a wooden oval plaque that we purchased from the craft store. I cut out a printable silhouette of a girl { printable courtesy } Alternatively you could also make your own child’s silhouette Then I traced the outline on the plaque using a regular pencil. materials for chalkboard art

Now bring in the supplies. Gather your tintable chalkboard paint and acrylic paint. The tintable chalkboard paint is white-grey in color. Add the acrylic paint of your choice with the chalkboard paint. There aren’t any measurements. I added the pink to the chalkboard paint until I was satisfied with the color.

Once you have your own silhouette chalkboard plaque its uses are plenty. We are planning on using it to express our feelings and emotions. I’m planning on inviting my 7 year old to write down her thoughts all around the chalkboard plaque. Right now I have the standard ” How do you feel today?” , ” How was school?” on the board. You can hang it around the child’s homework desk, play desk, reading area, bedroom. Anywhere you think the kid spends a fair amount of time. DIY chalkboard
