Paint a foil pie pan with black washable acrylic paint mixed with a little dish soap. Once it's dry, scratch a spider web or any picture with a bamboo skewer so the shiny silver foil peeps through.
Bamboo skewers are pointy. Watch kids closely while they scratch, and collect the skewers when you're done.
Edges of disposable foil pie pans can be sharp. Check them and handle them gently.
Acrylic paint, even the washable kind, can stain clothes. Use smocks or old shirts and cover the table.
Paint and soap are not for mouthing. Wash hands after painting.
Before the kids arrive
For very eager kids, paint a few pie pans black ahead of time and let them dry, so the kids can start scratching right away.
Steps
Mix a couple of squirts of dish soap into 4 tbsp of black washable acrylic paint.
Paint a clean, dry foil pie pan with the black paint, covering the entire area.
Let the pie pan dry. It takes about 15 minutes with washable acrylics.
Scratch a design into the black paint with a bamboo skewer, so the silver foil shows through.
Etch a spider web and add 'Boo!' or 'Happy Halloween' around it.
Or scratch whatever you like: a girl, a house, a tree and other "stuff".
Hang the finished scratch art on the wall.
Tips
The soap added to the paint is what makes it stick to the pie pan, so don't skip it.from the author

Kids have their own ideas when it comes to art. My 4 year old was pretty sure about NOT drawing a spider web, and we LOVE them for that!from the author
It just looks like we created art with a silver pen, but it was all etched on a simple pie plate.from the author
Make it your own
Paint the pan purple or orange instead of black.
Skip the spider web and let kids etch a whole scene: people, houses, trees, pets.
Pair it with the crayon resist spider web art for a Halloween art table.
The story behind it
By TurkeyMom · October 2014
Ready for a super easy Halloween art project? We created another super easy Halloween art with spider web as a central theme. Well sort of, because kids have their own ideas!
Add a couple of squirts of dish soap to 4 tablespoons of black washable acrylic paint, paint a clean dry foil pie pan, let it dry, then start scratching away.
I initially had a nice Halloween art project in mind. Doesn't this spider web etched on the pie plate look cool? It would really make a great preschool Halloween art project.
But my 4 year old clearly had other plans! She was pretty sure about NOT drawing a spider web but a girl, a house, tree and other "stuff" (her words).
With some uninvited "help" from her 6 year old sister, they created a scratch art scene. It just looks like we created art with a silver pen!
We are all about simple art activities for kids, and this one is right up there with crayon resist. I'm officially in love with scratch art! These will look beautiful hanging on your wall.
