Make a firm, putty-like glue and liquid starch slime in several colors, then let kids pull, cut and squish it into pretend pizza toppings and serve it at a pretend restaurant. This is play food only. The slime is not edible or taste-safe.

⚠️ Safety first

  • This is pretend food, not real food. Glue and liquid starch slime is NOT taste-safe, so watch closely that kids don't put it in their mouths.
  • Check the liquid starch label: some brands contain borates. Adult does the mixing, and everyone washes hands after play.
  • The author gave kids knives and forks 'at your own discretion'. Use plastic utensils (and child-safe scissors, if any) and supervise cutting.
  • Food color can stain hands, clothes and table covers. Cover the table and wear old clothes.
  • Supervise sensory play at all times.

Before the kids arrive

  • Cover the play table.
  • Decide on your colors: brown and white for the base, and red, green and yellow for toppings.

Steps

  1. Adult: pour 1/2 cup of white glue into a bowl.

  2. Add your preferred food color to the glue and stir it in before adding any starch.

  3. Add 1/4 cup of liquid starch and start mixing.

  4. Once it gets stretchy, keep kneading and add the rest of the liquid starch. It should end up putty-like rather than very stretchy.

  5. Repeat with a new batch for each color.

  6. Put each color on its own paper plate and hand out plastic knives and forks.

  7. Squish, pull, tug and cut off pieces of slime.

  8. Build a pizza by adding red, green and yellow toppings to the brown or white slime.

  9. Set up a pretend restaurant and serve dinner.

Tips

  • Make a slightly harder slime, more putty-like and less slimy. It's better for pinching and cutting.from the author
  • Ours tried making pieces with the knives and forks but ended up simply pulling the pieces out to build their pizza.from the author
  • The squishing, pulling, tugging and cutting turned out to be the best part.from the author
  • Getting the exact colors can be tricky. My red for tomatoes came out more pinkish than red, but it still worked.from the author

Make it your own

  • Make Mexican play food instead. The author thought hers looked more like refried beans with cheese than pizza.
  • Set up shop with the finished dishes and play pretend restaurant.
  • For younger kids who still mouth things, try the author's psyllium-based edible slime instead (1-Ingredient Edible Rainbow Slime).
