Paint three pumpkins, decorate them with marker-drawn shapes, add a paper-and-felt face and painted stick arms, then stack them into a Pumpkin Lady for the porch. All you really need is pumpkins and paint; the extras are optional.

⚠️ Safety first

  • Use washable, non-toxic kids' paint. The post doesn't say which paint was used.
  • Pumpkins are heavy and can roll. An adult should help stack them so they don't fall on small hands or feet.
  • Adult does the cutting of the paper and felt facial features.
  • Small felt and paper pieces and sticks can be a choking or poking hazard for toddlers. Supervise closely.

Before the kids arrive

  • Cover the table with paper.
  • Pick three pumpkins in graduated sizes that will stack.

Steps

  1. Paint the middle pumpkin pink.

  2. Paint the largest pumpkin green.

  3. Let the paint dry. Come back to paint and decorate more over a few days.

  4. When the paint is dry, draw basic shapes on the pumpkin with a marker and color them in.

  5. Paint the smallest pumpkin with a mix of brown and yellow for the face.

  6. Adult: cut eyes from paper and a nose and mouth from felt. Then the child sticks them on the face.

  7. Paint two sticks pink for the hands.

  8. Once everything is dry, stack the pumpkins with the biggest on the bottom and the face on top, then put the hat on.

  9. Add the stick arms and any extras, and show off your Pumpkin Lady.

Make it your own

  • Set her out on the porch on a stool with a spider web backdrop.
  • Skip the face and extras and just paint pumpkins with geometric shapes.

halloween activities for kids While the girls did not paint and decorate all the three pumpkins in one go, the good part was that they kept coming back to paint and decorate some more over the course of 3 days. Good indicator that this Halloween activity is a hit.

When the paint dried on each pumpkin, Big A drew some basic shapes with a marker and colored them in. I did a few of them on the green pumpkin.
