Mix cornstarch, pink food color, rose body oil and water into a sweet-smelling goop (oobleck) that holds like a solid when squeezed and pours like a liquid. Add toy bugs for imaginative play.

⚠️ Safety first

  • Not for eating: the rose body oil and glycerin are cosmetic products, not food. Keep the goop out of mouths and supervise toddlers who mouth things.
  • Check the body oil's ingredient list for nut oils or fragrances a child may react to before use.
  • Keep goop away from eyes. Kids may pour it on each other, so set ground rules first.
  • Spilled goop makes floors slippery. Wipe up spills promptly.
  • Don't pour goop down the sink. Let it dry and scrape it into the trash.
  • Small toy bugs can be a choking hazard for toddlers. Supervise closely.
  • Supervise sensory play at all times.

Before the kids arrive

  • Set up the tub somewhere spills and drips are easy to clean up, because the kids may pour goop on each other.

Steps

  1. Empty both boxes of cornstarch into a shallow tub.

  2. Add the amount of food color you like.

  3. Add about 1 tbsp of rose body oil and 1 tbsp of rose glycerin (optional). Add more if you want a stronger smell.

  4. Add water a little at a time, mixing, until the cornstarch turns ooey gooey.

  5. Test it: squeeze some into a ball. When you let go, it should pour down like a liquid. Stop adding water and start playing!

  6. Press your hands in and watch the hand prints disappear.

  7. Squeeze, scoop and pour, and watch the goop change texture.

  8. When the kids ask for more, add toy bugs to get stuck in the rose muck.

Tips

  • I have this habit of introducing more materials only if requested and in stages. Let the kids do basic sensory play first.from the author
  • Just pouring it and watching this "magical" substance change texture never ceases to amaze them.from the author
  • So much squeezing and scooping goes on, which I think is a great fine motor workout.from the author
  • Feeling the goop is kind of therapeutic, at least for a while before the giggles and bathing each other with goop starts! Expect a big mess.from the author
  • It's so easy to whip up and keeps them entertained for an extended time.from the author

Make it your own

  • Add toy bugs and tell stories about bugs trapped in the rose muck and the queen ladybug saving them all.
  • Skip the rose scent and make a rainbow version, like our Rainbow Oobleck.

Rose-Scented Valentine Goop: the original post

We are kicking off brand new Valentine’s day activities with this yummy rose goop! A very simple way to start talking about Valentine’s day and what it may mean to your child. Since the children went way too crazy ( in a good way) and had too much fun with lots of hand waves, movements, pouring on each other etc AND since I’m no expert photographer all my action shots are kind of blurry! So I hope you have seen our Rainbow Oobleck? What’s better than vibrant messy play? Goop and sensory activities in general are some of my kids’ favorite activity to do at home. Just feeling whatever sensory element in front of them is kind of therapeutic I guess ( for a while at least before the giggles and bathing each other with goop starts!) This rose goop we made as a part of our Valentine’s day activities is so easy to whip up and keeps them entertained for extended time. Here they are having fun with their disappearing hand prints.

Even I can’t get enough of the wonderful texture of oobleck/ goop. Bonus - this one smells delicious! Just like Feb 14th?

So much squeezing and scooping going on which I think is a great fine motor work out.

I have this habit of introducing more materials only if requested and in stages. After some basic sensory play was done, my 5 year old asked for bugs to get stuck in there. So much imaginative play happened with multiple stories about bugs getting trapped in the rose muck and the queen lady bug saving them all..

Materials

  • Cornstarch ( 2 boxes)
  • Food Color
  • Rose Body Oil
  • Rose scented glycerin (optional)
  • Water

Here is the link to the oil we used. Empty the cornstarch in a shallow tub and add desired amount of food color. Add about 1 table spoon of rose oil and 1 table spoon of rose water glycerin. Add more if you need a stronger fragrance. Keep adding water until the cornstarch’s consistency changes to a ooeey gooey substance. Ideally it will remain solid and you can actually make a ball out of it. Once you stop applying pressure it pours down like a liquid. That’s when you stop adding the water and start playing!
