Toss apple slices with sugar, spices and a little flour, then let kids arrange them in rows on a sheet of puff pastry and bake for 15 minutes. It's a shortcut pie-filling-on-a-tart that kids can help with from start to finish.

⚠️ Safety first

  • An adult handles the oven: it bakes at 400°F, and the pan and tart are very hot coming out.
  • An adult cores and cuts the apples with a sharp knife.
  • Let the tart cool enough to handle before kids touch or eat it. Fruit filling stays hot longer than the crust.
  • This is real food: check for allergies first. Puff pastry and flour contain wheat, many puff pastry brands contain butter, and lemon juice is citrus. Ice cream or whipped cream adds dairy.
  • Don't let kids snack on the raw apple-flour mixture or raw pastry. Raw flour shouldn't be eaten uncooked.
  • Wash hands before starting and after handling raw dough.

Before the kids arrive

  • Thaw the puff pastry sheet following the instructions on the box.
  • Agree on kitchen rules with the kids before you start.

Steps

  1. Adult: preheat the oven to 400°F.

  2. Adult: core, halve and slice the apples, then put them in a bowl.

  3. Squeeze lemon juice over the apples so they don't brown.

  4. Add the cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, sugar, brown sugar and flour.

  5. Mix gently so the apple slices don't break. If it looks runny, add a little more flour.

  6. Roll out the puff pastry and mark a border along the edges.

  7. Arrange the apple slices in lines inside the border, nestling them close together.

  8. Adult: bake at 400°F for 15 minutes.

  9. Let it cool just enough to handle, then serve warm as is or with ice cream or whipped cream.

Tips

  • The only caution: don't let the mixture become watery. If it's runny, add some more flour to thicken.from the author
  • Use all the spices or just what you have on hand. You really cannot go wrong with it.from the author
  • Arranging the apples is the perfect kid job. Ours loves lining them up and does a fine job of nestling them closer.from the author
  • The border along the pastry edge helps kids know where to stop placing apples.from the author
  • Too tired after apple picking to make pie dough from scratch? Puff pastry is the shortcut that still satisfies a pie-craving hunger.from the author
  • Having kids in the kitchen doesn't have to be daunting if you agree on the rules and make it fun by involving them in a few steps.from the author

Make it your own

  • Go apple picking first and bake with the apples you picked.
  • Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.
  • Add more sugar if you like it sweeter.

Easy Apple Tart Pie: the original post

When everyone is baking pumpkin pie, we are here posting an apple pie recipe? Oh yes we are. The family went apple picking and hence we are here with a good apple recipe - apple tart pie. Fall brings many things: cold weather, vivid colors, festivities, pumpkins, apple and some wonderful apple desserts. Apple picking with the kids has become a family tradition. It is a great way for daddy to bond with his girls while connecting with nature. They try to reach the highest branch and pick the biggest apples. When we get back home mommy of course has the endless options of baking apple pie, apple tart or apple tart pie or any other apple dessert. Even before we started to pick, the first thing on my husband’s mind- When are you planning to make the pie? Almost immediately Big S echoes in on it – I want to make the pie ! Let us make it today. After a long day of apple picking, I’m too tired to make a pie-dough from scratch and and spend hours on peeling and cutting apples. But I also have a pie-loving man and a pie-maker to please. Call this a Pie or a Tart or an apple tart pie. Here is a short cut that is so easy and works for my family, it will satisfy a pie-craving hunger !

  • Puff pastry – 1 sheet
  • Apples – 6 or 7 medium , cored and halved
  • A squeeze of lemon juice
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • a pinch of salt
  • 3 tbs Sugar( you can add more if you klike it to be more sweet)
  • ¼ cup of brown sugar
  • 2 tbs All purpose flour

Do you see where I am going with this? It’s a pie filling on a tart. You can use all or use up what you have on hand to flavor. You really cannot go wrong with it. The only caution is, do not let the mixture become watery. If it is runny add some more flour to thicken. Better yet, this is such a kid friendly recipe and something they can be involved from start to finish. What can be better than that? Having your kids in the kitchen doesn’t have to be a daunting task if we agree upon the rules and make the task more fun by involving them in a few steps. I have broken down the process into easy steps for your convenience.

Step 1

Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees. Thaw the puff pastry sheet. ( follow instructions on the box)

Step 2

Cut the apples and put them in a bowl. Squeeze the lemon juice over it ( to avoid browning) and add all the ingredients except the puff pastry, of-course ! Mix them, gently enough not to break the apples.

Step 3

Roll out the puff pastry and draw a border along the edges .

Step 4

Arrange the slices onto the pastry sheet leaving an edge ( this is where the border helps). Big S loves arranging the apples in a line and sure enough does a fine job of nestling them closer.

Step 5

Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes.

How easy is that? Hope you give it a try and get your kids involved. Remember to discuss rules and make memories in the kitchen with your kids. Ok..“making memories” is not THAT much of a corny phrase. Thanks for reading

✨ Readers' twist

Reader plans to use homemade crust

A reader with lots of farm-fresh apples wants to try the recipe but will likely swap in her own crust for the puff pastry.

This looks great and something that I really want to try. I get fresh fruit and vegetables from local farms every week and I have a lot of apples! I will likely use my own crust though. Thanks! Danielle at daniellepender dot com
