Kids draw friendly little ghosts on colored foam sheets and add faces with markers. An adult cuts them out, and kids tape them to a door for a not-so-spooky ghost party. It is a gentle Halloween craft for little ones who find the holiday a bit scary.

⚠️ Safety first

  • Adult does the cutting with scissors, as the author did in the post.
  • Supervise young children with markers and pens, and keep small foam scraps away from kids who still mouth things.

Steps

  1. Pick your favorite colors of foam sheets.

  2. Draw little ghosts on the foam with a pen.

  3. Add smiley faces with markers.

  4. Adult: cut each ghost out along the lines.

  5. Stick a piece of tape to the back of each ghost.

  6. Attach the ghosts to a door.

  7. Make more in all sizes, big guys and small guys, for a ghost party.

Tips

  • Let the child lead. This one was conceptualized completely by my preschooler, from drawing to deciding what she needed.from the author
  • Make them of all sizes, big guys and some small guys. For sure they'll be the cutest guys.from the author
  • To understand your child's Halloween fears better, put yourself in her shoes. Little ones still don't fully understand fantasy and reality, even when they say 'It's pretend, not real'.from the author
  • Hand over the cutting job gladly. 'You cut this mommy, you are very good with scissors you know.' Quite a compliment, I say.from the author

Make it your own

  • Use the ghosts to decorate a child's bedroom door or room for Halloween.
  • Pair it with a monster tea party to help play away Halloween fears.

Foam Ghost Party
My preschooler showed me a spooky Ghost mommy she drew and wanted to make more for her room. I pulled out some foam sheets, she picked her colors and started drawing little ghosts.

Foam Ghost Party: the original post

As I have mentioned before here, end-to-end kid created activities are very special to us. It shows me that the child can chalk out her own activity. This is one such Halloween activity conceptualized completely by my pre schooler. Halloween for some can be truly challenging especially when it is filled with fear and anxiety. Strange masks, creatures and spooky images can really dampen the holiday spirits. It is that one day when you just don’t know what to think or expect.

That said, here is what happened in our home:

Big S runs into my office and shows me a picture that she drew -

It’s a spooky Ghost mommy !

It was the cutest looking ghost I’ve ever seen. Ha!

She wanted to make more so she can decorate her room and she clearly knew what she needed.

  • Foam sheets
  • Markers
  • Pen
  • Scissors
  • Cello tape

I pulled out some foam sheets, she picked her colors and started drawing little ghosts.

She was quick to assign me some task - “You cut this mommy, you are very good with scissors you know.”

Quite a compliment I say. I cut it along the lines and she took a piece of tape and adhered it to the back of the tiny ghosts and attached them all to her door.

It’s a ghosts party mom ! She wasn’t done yet, she made them of all sizes, big guys and some small guys but for sure they were the cutest guys. She was so happy and so proud of her creations.

  • To understand your child’s fears better, I put myself in her shoes. I try to remember that she still doesn’t understand fantasy and reality although she says “It’s pretend not real”.

We tried to play away her fears by having a monster tea party here. Enjoy the day, savor the candy and have fun. Have a safe and enjoyable Halloween with all of your little ones!
