Kids decorate foam butterfly and chick cut-outs with googly eyes, sequins, pom poms, gems, feathers and glitter glue. Once dry, the shapes are hung on a ribbon as a spring mobile.

⚠️ Safety first

  • Googly eyes, sequins, spangles, acrylic gems and pom poms are small parts and a choking hazard. Supervise closely, especially with toddlers or kids who still mouth things.
  • Cut pipe cleaner ends can be sharp. An adult cuts them ahead of time.
  • Keep glue and glitter glue away from eyes and mouths, and wash hands after crafting.
  • Adult hangs the finished mobile.

Before the kids arrive

  • Cut pipe cleaners into small pieces.
  • Sort the decorations (googly eyes, sequins, spangles, pom poms, gems, pipe cleaner bits, feathers) into a tray or small containers for each table.

Steps

  1. Set out the foam butterflies and chicks with the tray of decorations and glue.

  2. Pick a foam butterfly or chick to decorate.

  3. Brush a little glue on the back of a googly eye and press it on.

  4. Glue on sequins, spangles, gems, pom poms and pipe cleaner pieces any way you like.

  5. Add colorful feathers.

  6. Squeeze glitter glue lines and swirls onto your shape.

  7. Decorate more butterflies and chicks, then let them dry.

  8. Adult: attach the dried shapes to a green ribbon and hang the mobile on the wall.

Directions for this spring craft for kids

This time I got a pack of foam butterflies and birds just for $1 each. I set out these cuties along with our usual fine motor activities accessories. Typically I have googly eyes, sequins, spangles, pom poms, acrylic gems, cut up pipe cleaners and every now and then feathers.

Then it is all about the kids and how they want to continue with this spring craft. My 3 year old started with the chick and decorated her bird with all sorts of assortments.

She was very particular about using the brush to apply some glue on the back of the googly eyes. Sure this is even more of a fine motor activity.

This time I had glitter glue out so they were even more excited with this spring craft since they get to decorate with GLITTER GLUE!

Some birds were stuffed with colorful pom poms. We even had a butterfly with feathers! Crafting with children becomes an enjoyable process when I let go my adult inhibitions and go with the flow.
