Pinch a foam sponge into a head and body with a rubber band, add googly eyes and a fuzzy-stick halo, then attach painted, glittery handprint wings. Hang the angels on the tree as homemade ornaments or use them as puppets for make-believe play.

⚠️ Safety first

  • Googly eyes and sequins are small parts and a choking hazard. Supervise closely, especially with kids who still mouth things.
  • An adult should handle the stapler, or closely supervise its use.
  • Supervise scissors use and help younger kids cut out the handprints.
  • Rubber bands can snap while being twisted. Keep them away from faces and out of mouths.
  • Glitter can get into eyes. Wash hands after the activity.

Steps

  1. Place a hand flat on the paper and trace around it. Make two handprints for each angel.

  2. Cut out the handprints.

  3. Paint the handprints and add a bit of sparkle with glitter.

  4. Set the painted handprints aside to dry.

  5. Twist a rubber band around the sponge to make two sections: the head and the body.

  6. Glue on googly eyes and other facial features, like a sequin nose.

  7. Twist a fuzzy stick into a halo and attach it to the top of the head.

  8. Tape or staple two handprints together to make the wings.

  9. Glue the wings to the back of the angel's body.

  10. Hang your angel on the tree, or use it as a puppet for a make-believe play scene.

Tips

  • Twisting those rubber bands onto the sponge is an excellent fine motor workout for the lil' fingers.from the author
  • Let your child take the lead and be creative. My 4-year-old can't resist adding glitter to everything we make, so that's what we did.from the author
  • You could just staple the handprints together to make the wings and then glue them to the body. My girl experimented with tape, stapler and glue to find the better route, and the jury is still deliberating!from the author
  • You know it was a successful craft when you hear "Can we make some more Angels?? Please!!!"from the author

Make it your own

  • Use the angels as puppets for a make-believe play scene instead of ornaments.
  • Make a whole family of angels in different sponge colors, each with its own handprint wings.
