Kids glue pencil shavings onto folded construction paper or cardstock to make flowers, draw stems, leaves and bees, then paint the dried shavings. It makes an easy homemade Mother's Day card.
An adult or older child does the sharpening. Sharpener blades are sharp.
Pencil shavings can have small, pointed pencil-lead tips. Supervise young children so they don't put bits in their mouths.
Use washable, non-toxic kids' paint and glue. Wash hands after the activity.
Before the kids arrive
Collect pencil shavings ahead of time and try not to break them into bits. The longer strands you can get, the better.
If you want the learning extra, save shavings from both round, smooth pencils and pencils with sides.
Steps
Fold or cut a sheet of construction paper or cardstock to card size.
Put a round spot of glue where you want a flower.
Press pencil shavings onto the glue to make a flower. Use bigger pieces for layers and broken bits for buds.
Draw stems, leaves and bees around your flowers.
Set the card aside and let the glue dry.
Once dry, paint the pencil shavings in the colors of your choice.
Let the paint dry, then give your card to someone you love.
