Kids decorate the shiny side of two old CDs. An adult hot glues them back to back with a leftover plastic Easter egg in the middle to make a little spaceship. Tuck it into a tissue-lined shoe box with an 'outta this world' note for a Mother's Day gift.

⚠️ Safety first

  • Hot glue is for adults. If kids help glue, use a low-temp mini hot glue gun and supervise closely.
  • Keep the hot glue gun out of kids' reach while it heats and cools.
  • Sequins, spangles and glitter are small parts. Supervise younger children who still mouth things.
  • If a CD cracks, set it aside. Broken CD edges can be sharp.

Before the kids arrive

  • Collect two old CDs and one leftover plastic egg per child.
  • Download and print the free 'mom you are out of this world' rocket or UFO printable, if using.
  • Cover the table. Decorating can get a little messy.

Steps

  1. Give each child two CDs to decorate on the shiny side.

  2. Decorate to your heart's content with paint, glued-on sequins, glitter, foam stickers, markers or watercolors.

  3. Let the art dry.

  4. Adult: hot glue the two CDs back to back with the decorated shiny sides facing out, so the artwork isn't covered.

  5. Open the plastic egg. Adult: hot glue the top half onto the center of one side, covering the hole, and the bottom half onto the other side.

  6. Fill a shoe box with tissue paper and place the spaceship inside.

  7. Attach a handwritten note, like 'Mommy, you're so outta this world - Thank you and Love you', or the free printable.

Tips

  • Use your leftover plastic eggs from Easter. I'm sure you have plenty lying around the house, and I bet you have old CDs too.from the author
  • If you are not up for picking up glitter, offer stuff that you are comfortable with, like foam stickers, gluing sequins, markers or water colors.from the author
  • Very simple craft, so dads, relax! You can put this one together with the kids in no time.from the author
  • Glue the egg halves on with the art facing out. You don't want to cover up the art work!from the author

Make it your own

  • Glue the egg shell only on the top so kids can use their fingers to hover the spacecraft around.
  • Attach the free rocket or UFO 'mom you are out of this world' printable instead of a handwritten note.
  • Skip the gift box and keep the spaceships as a recycled space craft for play.

Out-of-This-World CD Spaceship Gift for Mom: the original post

An easy Mother’s day kids craft made from recyclables and a free printable included. Homemade cards and homemade Mother’s day gifts are the best! Honestly everyday is a very special Mothers Day for me. Ever since I became a mom to my two beautiful daughters, my world is changed for the better. It has taught me things I never knew existed. I now know what my Mother meant when she said “Talk to me when you have children” ! I now know my mother was a “SUPER WOMAN” While it’s the day I love all the attention, it truly is a very stressful time for my husband who know has this mighty challenge( go figure) to take the girls out and find me a present. Last year he took the girls to Micheal’s and they made this beautiful apron with hand prints and my then 3 yr old made these adorable drawings on them. Boy! was I was ecstatic! So, while working on a separate craft project, I thought our creations would make for a wonderful Mother’s day craft and in turn a great Mother’s day gift as well. The dads can put together this one in no time. Dads- this is straight up your alley ! All you need for this Mother’s day craft Materials

Very simple craft so, dads if you are reading this… Relax ! Use your leftover plastic eggs for this craft - I’m sure you have plenty lying around the house and for CD’s? I bet you have them too. Who uses CD’s anymore ( although I do. Just for the nostalgia) Give two CD’s to your kids and let them decorate it to their hearts content on the shiny side. Now this part can get a little messy, so if you are not up for picking up glitter, offer them stuff that you are comfortable with like foam stickers, or gluing sequins, markers or water colors. cd upcycle art Let the art dry. Now hot glue the CD’s back to back, shiny side up, you dont want to cover up the art work ! cd recycle art Open the plastic egg and hot glue the top and bottom of the egg on to the center of the CD’s covering the hole. Your own little spacecrafts. How is that for a super fun craft for kids? You can opt to just use the egg shells only on the top so the kids can use their fingers to hover the space craft around. I’ll leave that up to the child’s interest. Now here comes the very best part: Turn the Mother’s Day Craft into a gift. Take a shoe box, fill it up with tissue paper and place the spaceship inside.Attach your handwritten note, something like “Mommy, you’re so outta this world - Thank you and Love you” Mother's day gift ideas Now tell me a mom who would’nt love that as a Mother’s day gift? Now ladies: You can leave your screen on for dad to see this page. Here are our spaceships that we made ! cd recycle craft spaceship
