Kids criss-cross black-and-white washi tape on a black canvas, then add gold dot stickers at the intersections and gold star and moon sequins in the spaces. The result is a striking piece of night-sky wall art. It's easy process art that pairs well with learning about the night sky or constellations.
Sequins and small stickers are choking hazards. Supervise closely, especially with younger children.
Mod Podge is not for mouths. Keep it away from faces and wash hands after gluing.
Before the kids arrive
Sort gold star and crescent moon sequins out of a loose sequin jar into a small dish for each station.
Steps
Set out a black canvas and a few rolls of black-and-white washi tape.
Stick strips of washi tape across the canvas so the lines cross each other.
Try to avoid parallel lines, so the tape makes triangles and trapezoids.
When you like your design, press a gold dot sticker onto the places where the tapes cross.
Fill the empty spaces with gold stars and crescent moons, gluing the sequins down with Mod Podge.
Let the glue dry.
Hang up your abstract night sky and enjoy!
Tips
My older kid stuck to her favorite black-and-white theme. She avoided parallel lines to create more interest, so the canvas ended up with more trapezoids and triangles.from the author
The gold dots were self-adhesive, but the gold moon and star sequins needed to be glued to the canvas.from the author
This was supposed to be a simple canvas-and-tape project but turned into a night sky. Let kids decide when the design is done.from the author

Make it your own
Keep it simple: stop after the tape and gold dots for plain abstract canvas-and-tape art.
Pair it with a night sky or constellations lesson.
The story behind it
By TurkeyMom · May 2020
The kids are keen on redecorating their rooms these days. This is the easiest abstract art for kids, and it can easily be a striking wall art.
A black canvas and some cute tape was a good starting point for this abstract art. From there the older kid started designing her own canvas with washi tape.
She stuck to her favorite black and white theme, avoiding parallel lines. Once she was satisfied with the design, she stuck the gold dot stickers on the intersections to bring more shine in.
Once she finished the gold dots, she decided to fill in the empty spaces with moon and stars. The dots were self-adhesive, but the moon and star sequins needed to be glued.
Hang up the abstract art and enjoy! It's a great companion activity if you are learning about the night sky or constellations.
