Sprinkle grated crayon shavings onto foam hearts, then cover with wax paper and press with an iron to melt them into colorful art. Decorate with glitter glue and hang with a chenille stem to make a handmade Valentine's gift.

⚠️ Safety first

  • Adult handles the iron at all times. Keep kids' hands away from the hot iron and from the wax paper right after pressing.
  • Adult does the grating. The author stepped in because grating was hard for her child.
  • Crayon shavings are small bits. Supervise young children so they don't put them in their mouths.
  • Foam can warp or melt under a hot iron. Test one heart first on a low setting and press briefly.

Before the kids arrive

  • Cut heart shapes from foam sheets.
  • Adult: grate the crayon bits into shavings and sort them by color onto small plates.

Steps

  1. Adult: grate the crayons into shavings and put each color on its own small plate.

  2. Set out the plates of shavings and the foam hearts in an assembly line.

  3. Sprinkle crayon shavings onto a foam heart.

  4. Cover the heart with a sheet of wax paper.

  5. Adult: press the iron down on the wax paper and lift it straight up. Don't slide it or hold it down too long.

  6. Pull back the wax paper to see the melted crayon art.

  7. Decorate the edges or write a message with glitter glue.

  8. Punch a hole and loop a chenille stem through it to hang your heart.

Tips

  • Just press and lift up the iron. If you slide the iron or press it down too long, you create a smear, so be advised.from the author

These are lovely and what a fun process! I have been wanting to try this for a long time now, but been too lazy to grate the crayon bits, easier for me to melt them in muffin tray into chunky crayons :)
