Kids trace and cut out their handprints from black paper, glue on orange triangle nails, then 'spookify' them with glitter glue and googly eyes. Add popsicle sticks to turn them into spooky hand puppets. It's great scissor practice.

⚠️ Safety first

  • Googly eyes are small parts and a choking hazard. Supervise closely with young children; the author suggests peel-and-stick googly eyes for younger kids.
  • Supervise scissor use, especially with preschoolers.
  • Keep glitter glue away from eyes and mouths, and wash hands after.

Steps

  1. Trace your hand on black construction paper, or let a grown-up trace it. Add a little wiggle to the line to make it spooky.

  2. Cut out the hand along the bumpy line, or trace normally and cut with paper edger scissors.

  3. Draw small triangles on orange paper and cut them out. These are the nails.

  4. Glue an orange nail onto the tip of each finger.

  5. Spookify the hand with tons of glitter glue.

  6. Stick on googly eyes all over the hand.

  7. Optional: ball up bits of tissue paper and glue them on as warts.

  8. Lay the hands flat until the glitter glue is dry.

  9. Optional: attach a popsicle stick to the back of each hand to make a spooky hand puppet.

Or you can trace normally and use a paper edger scissors to cut out a bumpy hand print like we did. The below images will show you both the options. One cut with a regular scissors a and one done with a trimmer. This Halloween craft is a good exercise to practice those scissor skills.

After cutting out their hand print, the kids can draw small triangles and cut them out as well. These will be their spooky hands’ nails.

Then comes in lots of gluing. I can see this is a fantastic preschool craft for Halloween. Glue those orange nails on the black hand print cut out.

Then “decorate” or rather “spookify” the hands with tons of glitter glue and googly eyes. Try those peel and stick googly eyes for younger children.
