Cut Christmas shapes like candy canes and bells from thick paper, lay them on card stock, and spray over them with a marker-powered airbrush kit to make homemade holiday cards. Kids can also free-spray, layer colors, and use the kit's alphabet and picture stencils.

⚠️ Safety first

  • Adult supervision is recommended for the airbrush kit. An adult loads the 4 C batteries and handles the power switch.
  • Spray only down at the paper, never toward faces or eyes.
  • Scissors for cutting stencils are an adult job, or close supervision for older kids.
  • Younger kids (the author's 3-year-old) need hands-on help with the sprayer.

Before the kids arrive

  • Cut Christmas shapes (candy canes, bells, stars, trees, snowmen) out of thick paper or card stock to use as stencils.
  • Insert 4 C batteries into the motorized sprayer and test it.

Steps

  1. Cover the work area with an old tablecloth.

  2. Adult: press the power button on the side of the sprayer.

  3. Push a Super Tip marker into the motorized brush just far enough that it's snug.

  4. Lay a thick sheet of paper down and place a stencil on top.

  5. Hold the stencil flat and spray over the cut-out shape.

  6. Swap in another marker to add a new color or layer colors.

  7. Lift the stencil to reveal your shape and let the card dry.

  8. Try the kit's alphabet and picture stencils, or spray free-form art.

  9. Wipe the stencils with a soft cloth and store them in the sleeve at the back of the caddy.

Tips

  • Don't push the marker too far into the brush or the "paint" will glob and you won't get a smooth spray. If it's not in far enough, the ink won't spray well. Push it in just enough to be snug; you'll get there with a bit of trial and error.from the author
  • The marker didn't spray all over the place. It was the perfect amount of ink, so I didn't need as much table protection as I thought.from the author
  • With some assistance, even my 3-year-old got in on the fun making candy cane cards.from the author
  • My 5-year-old used the provided stencils just for a little while. I let her freely explore the materials and she created some fantastic artwork.from the author
  • Even the stencils looked adorable after the project, with the sprayed color around the edges.from the author
  • The motorized sprayer means kids don't depend on their own strength, so they can focus on the art.from the author
  • A teacher is making handmade cards with her students for soldiers who won't be home for the holidays; the Red Cross sends them.from readers

Make it your own

  • Layer different colors for free-form airbrush art.
  • Use the alphabet stencils to practice letters and sight words.
  • Make a beach scene with the kit's picture stencils.
  • Cut stencils for stars, trees and snowmen as well as candy canes and bells.
  • Make homemade gifts as well as cards.
  • Make cards as a class to send to soldiers for the holidays (a reader's idea).

Even the stencils looked adorable after the Christmas craft and art project!

stencils for homemade cards So what is Rose Art Extreme Airbrush Studio? It is a great frugal arts and craft toy/kit which uses markers to create airbrush art. Perfect for kids age 5+ ( Manufacturer’s age recommendation is 6+) But you know what, the process is so simple that even my 3 year old was able to create wonderful art work with it. What comes inside the box? Caddy, Motorized sprayer ( requires 4 ‘c’ batteries not included) Rose Art Super tip Markers, 4 stencils. These are all the things you need to create fun homemade Christmas cards, any Holiday cards or homemade gifts. Roseart extreme airbrush studio Set-up The set-up time and installation was a snap. I inserted the 4 C batteries and hit the power button located on the side. Since this is an airbrush tool, I took precaution and covered our work area with an old table cloth. It turned out that I did not need that much protection. Then all we had to do was insert a RoseArt Super tip marker inside the motorized brush and start spraying Note: If you do a quick research you will see reviews stating that getting the markers to fit properly in the brush takes a little bit of time and practice. I should say that this did not happen to us. The marker fit in easily and the spray was great and uniform. In any case if it does happen to you here are some tips I have collected from other reviews. Tips: Don’t go too far into the brush then the “paint” will glob and you will not get a smooth brush. If you don’t go far in the ink will not spray adequately. Push it in just enough and ensure it is snug. You will get there with a bit of trial and error. Also, have an extra set of markers ready just incase your little artists don’t want to stop! Here is a video that will help you.

So what did we do with this art and craft toy?

Art activities with this airbrush toy - create homemade Christmas Cards

The kit came with 4 stencils. Since we wanted to make cards I used card stock paper to create a bunch of new stencils. My children are very excited about Christmas and wanted to make candy canes, stars, trees, snow man and what not! All I did was use thick paper and cut out their favorites shapes.

christmas cards stencils We placed a thick sheet of paper first, placed the stencil on top and sprayed away. The marker did not spray away all around or anything. It was the perfect amount of ink which got sprayed.

With some assistance even the 3 year old got in on the fun to create some candy cane themed homemade Christmas cards.

candy cane crafts with airbrush My 6 year old tried to layer different colors and she was overjoyed with her free form art she created. We tried the alpabet stencils. I see this can be a great tool for recognizing and practicing sight words.

Once you are done using it, it has a good cord management system and the entire caddy stores compactly. I wiped down the stencils with a soft cloth and stored them in the sleeve provided at the back of the caddy. The caddy also has some space to store the markers. This airbrush toy will be a perfect frugal gift for any arts and crafts lovng child. Better yet, if you want a child to get interested in art, this will possibly do the trick. One point I really want to stress is that with the gift giving season, we like to watch our budget. I’m all for fun yet frugal gifts for kids. Rose Art Extreme Airbrush Studio is great combo in that regard - pocket-friendly and a toy kids will love. With the rise in pocket devices and numerous handheld media, all parents love for the kids to play with open ended toys -toys that spark creativity. Right? This toy fits the bill. With such an easy to set -up procedure, the kids were independently creating and exploring on their own. My 5 year old used the provided stencils just for a little while. I let her freely explore the materials and she created some fantastic art work. The motorized sprayer is a great inclusion. If the toy had depended on the kids strength to power the airbrush I’m not too sure if they would have enjoyed it that much. The motorized part gave them a chance for continuous fun so they can focus on the art projects.

  • Creative, open ended arts and craft toy for kids
  • Great fit for the Holiday season
  • Budget-friendly. Retails for under $20 at some retailers and under $30 at others
  • The motorized sprayer minimizes frustration and maximizes fun
