Kids slot together a paperboard city kit, decorate the houses with markers or paint, and use them for pretend play. Then they snap wheels, feet, spirals and propellers onto rubber-ball hubs to build creatures and machines.

⚠️ Safety first

  • The creature building kit has small plastic parts. Supervise closely, and keep it away from children under 3 or any child who still mouths toys.
  • Little kids need an adult's help to slot the city pieces together.
  • Use washable markers or paint when kids decorate the houses.

Before the kids arrive

  • Unpack the city kit and check that all pieces and the instructions are there.
  • Set out markers or paint at the building table.

Steps

  1. Lay out the city kit pieces and find the roof, base and sides for each house.

  2. Slot the pieces together, following the instructions, to build each house. Adults help the little ones.

  3. Decorate the houses with markers or paint to personalize your city.

  4. Set the four houses up as a city and bring in toys and cars for pretend play.

  5. Spread the building kit parts out on a tray so everyone can see them.

  6. Start with a rubber ball and attach wheels, feet, loops, spirals or propellers.

  7. Build a creature, a machine or anything you can dream up.

  8. Stand your creations side by side and show them off.

Tips

  • Little kids have to be helped, but older kids can build the houses themselves. The instructions are simple because everything goes together with slots.from the author
  • The pieces are named (roof, base and sides), which makes building easier.from the author
  • The city kit builds engineering skills and artistic skills, because kids can personalize the entire city to their liking.from the author
  • I can see this city getting hours of pretend play.from the author
  • The little propeller makes building machines so much fun.from the author
  • One reader thought the paper houses would make a perfect travel toy.from readers

Make it your own

  • Halloween party: get a bunch of the building kits and let the children create monsters and other wacky creatures.
  • Use paint instead of markers to decorate the city.

This post is sponsored by Uncommon Goods. All the opinions are my own. Really, if I didn’t like the product I don’t think I would spend the time writing about it. Their stuff is amazing and you should check out their website, Uncommongoods. Do you have a child who likes to build and create structures? Do you have a child who likes to decorate things, paint and draw? If you are a parent who tries to buy unique toys for their own children and as gifts then this post is REALLY for you! I’m going to introduce you to one of a kind online store selling kids stuff ( among other things!) My children enjoy pretend play and engineering activities equally. Fostering creativity and engineering skills with the help of unique toys from Uncommon Goods

First up is this cool city construction kit { product link has very detailed information} I was impressed with the quality of the kit. The kit comes with all things needed to build 4 houses complete with instructions. The instructions are simple to follow since the entire kit is designed to be build using slots. The pieces are named { roof, base and sides} for easier construction experience. Little kids have to be helped but I can see older kids can build the houses themselves.
